Marlins' drafting is poor. Marlins' development is even more concerning because teams usually hit on one two two guys even if they're just depth kind of players. Marlins' roster has, what, four position players who'll start 100+ games, plus Stanton, that were home grown. No bench guys who'll log 100 PA's that are home grown.

That's the problem. It's not exceptionally hard to develop position players, but the Marlins sure make it look that way.
On the flip side, and Lord knows I'm not a FO apologist, but there's some credit due for scouting other teams' shitty players, right? Obviously we talk about Uggla as a Rule 5 pick but even guys like Solano and Bour are nice young cheap players that someone deserves credit for finding. Drafting and scouting for trades and scouting for waiver/Rule 5 all occur separately and although the decision-makers are the same, the influencers aren't. Whoever is in charge of finding players from the scrap heap is due praise, and whoever scouts for trades and drafts should be tarred and feathered.

To be fair, Canha and Barnes were both drafted and developed and should be solid bench pieces.

But this is a team that doesn't value bench or depth

Exactly like Colin Moran. Moran who was advertised as a solid 3B who can play for 10 years and will hit doubles

What did he do this year in AA- .306 252B 9HR 67RBI in 96 Games. Exactly what he was suppose to be

I was actually talking about guys we pick in Rd 3-5 tho.

Scrap heap means cheap and drafts are not. As for trades, most teams have no interest in paying millions for a player AND give away TOP prospects. Since they know we would rather get rid of the cash they dont offer TOP ones

We have some nice scouts.just imagine what they could do with cash to spend. IFA/Drafts

It's amazing that after all the moves and deals we made this offseason, that in retrospect if we mostly kept the same team as last year we might've been good (injuries notwithstanding of course). I'll never understand why they let Canha go for nothing, and Barnes (who the board knows I mentioned often) was somewhat thrown into the Gordon trade.

It's funny to look around the league and see some solid contributors we've given up recently. And now the team is absolutely in trouble when it comes to team depth both in the majors and the minors.

While it doesn't matter, it is funny that depth ends up being a major problem since I asked Jennings/Hill during a before the season event if they were concerned about giving up so much of the minors for a run now. Obviously they said no because duh, but in retrospect we made some poor moves. But hey you live you learn and with Loria you only get fired if you're a manager.

They picked him up for free at age 24 from an organization well-known for identifying young talent. He's had a positive WAR every year but this year and a career WAR around 1. He's a solid bench player with positional flexibility. So yes, I give credit to them finding him rather than going their usual route of signing a couple 34 year old middle infielders for 150k and a NRI. It's not Solano's fault the Marlins have grossly misused him.

He was a 1.1 fWAR player in 2012. As a minor league free agent. That alone is enough to deserve praise for finding him.

Marlins hiring DelPiano to oversee Minors operations

                      By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com | @JoeFrisaro | September 7th, 2015 + 3 COMMENTS
MIAMI -- The restructuring of the Marlins' front office is underway. The organization is expected to hire Marc DelPiano to oversee its Minor League operations, MLB.com has confirmed.

ESPN's Keith Law first reported DelPiano will be leaving the Pirates to return to the Marlins, where he was the director of player development during the 2003 World Series championship season. The Marlins have not announced or commented on the report.

DelPiano has been a special assistant to the general manager with the Pirates.

The Marlins have been courting DelPiano for several months, sources say. Miami also has interest in another Pittsburgh special assistant to the general manager, Jim Benedict. But it is unclear if the Pirates will make Benedict, a highly valued pitching evaluator, available.

Last week, the Marlins made some front-office changes, reassigning Marty Scott and Craig Weissmann. The team has not officially announced those changes.

Scott has been the vice president of player development, and Weissmann has been vice president of player personnel.

The Marlins remain in the process of deciding what is next for manager Dan Jennings.

Jennings met with upper management regarding his status on Thursday. He is expected to remain with the Marlins in 2016, but in what capacity is unknown.

Most likely, Jennings will go back to his general manager chair, but whether his responsibilities will be the same as before he became manager has not been decided.

A well-respected evaluator with more than three decades of professional experience, Jennings might have general manager options elsewhere. He's been linked to the Mariners, Orioles and Angels. But Jennings, under contract through 2018, is expected to stay with the Marlins, where he remains in good standing.

                      And this from Fish Stripes:

According to this old Sun-Sentinel article about (surprise!) a mutiny in the front office of the Marlins after the 2004 season, there were issues on various sides.

Several members of the front office came to the defense of former farm director Marc DelPiano, who has been reassigned to the international scouting department. DelPiano was not at the New York meeting.

Particular issue was taken with Samson's comment that a "trained monkey" could run the farm system. Brian Chattin, DelPiano's assistant the past two years, is expected to replace his mentor.

DelPiano was reassigned from a top role managing the farm to a lesser role more than ten years ago, likely at the behest of Loria. Now, many years later, he is being brought back to serve a similar prominent minor league role despite all the commentary that was made back then, particularly by team president David Samson. The irony is rather interesting.

Marlins Front Office To Undergo “Significant Changes”
By Charlie Wilmoth [October 3, 2015 at 12:02pm CDT]
12:02pm: The Marlins have talked to Rays director of player personnel Matt Arnold about a front office job, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.

10:12am: There will be “significant changes” in the Marlins’ front office, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports tweets. Current assistant GM Mike Berger will take over a role similar to that of GM, although it’s unknown at this point what his actual title will be. It’s not clear what role, if any, current manager and former full-time GM Dan Jennings will occupy. Lately, owner Jeffrey Loria has reportedly listened to Berger and others more closely than Jennings. Also, the Marlins recently fired pro scout Mickey White and reassigned vice president of player personnel Craig Weissmann, both close associates of Jennings.

The Marlins are also currently interviewing candidates for their managerial job. It had previously been reported that they had offered Jennings a job in their front office, although perhaps he’ll go elsewhere, with the Phillies being one possibility.

It has, of course, been a disappointing season in Miami. The Marlins acquired Mat Latos, Martin Prado, Dee Gordon, Dan Haren, Michael Morse, Ichiro Suzuki and others last winter in an attempt to contend, but they struggled out of the gate, fired manager Mike Redmond, and have slouched to a 69-90 season so far amidst injuries to key players like Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Fernandez.
