  • Rumor: Loria on Redmond: "He's the manager. Period."

NEW YORK -- Reeling from a four-game sweep to the New York Mets that left the Marlins with the second-worst record in the majors at 3-10, manager Mike Redmond's job may be in jeopardy as the team heads to Philadelphia for a series with the Phillies that could dictate his fate.

According to sources who have heard rumblings, Redmond is on the hot seat and the the organization is already bouncing around possible replacements. One possibility: Wally Backman, the Mets' Triple A manager.

History has shown that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria isn't shy about making managerial changes, as he canned Jeff Torborg in May of 2003, replacing him with Jack McKeon, after that eventual World Series team got off to a poor start. He also dumped Fredi Gonzalez in June of 2010 for Edwin Rodriguez when that team was struggling. He fired both Joe Girardi and Ozzie Guillen after just one season.

But would Loria go so far as to fire a manager less than 20 games into the season?

Sources said Loria is not happy with the team's play, and Giancarlo Stanton's post-game comments Friday suggesting the team lacked "fire," while in no way directed at the more laid-back style of Redmond, might have had the unintended effect of creating that impression. Loria has always had a strong preference for fiery managers. McKeon fit that bill, and Loria courted the combustible Bobby Valentine, as well as hiring Guillen, for those reasons.

    So we'll see.

Following an offseason in which the front office revamped the roster with trades and free agent signings, many projected the Marlins to contend for a playoff spot. Now that they're off to a terrible start, everything is on the table, including Redmond's job. Even though Redmond was given a contract extension at the end of last season that takes him through 2017, it doesn't mean his job is secure. Guillen was fired after only one year of a four-year contract. The Marlins are still paying him.

Dropping the upcoming series to the Phillies -- a team that pretty much everyone has pegged for last in the N.L. East -- could carry major ramifications. Whether those involve Redmond remains to be seen.
Well, this is not shocking in the least bit.

Is Mike Redmond on the hot seat?

Not a fan of a grown man throwing a tantrum like this. Arguing with an ump is one thing throwing every bat in the dugout onto the field makes him seem like a child. That said he could be the best manager ever but I highly doubt it.

      He's the best.

History has shown managers aren't the issue with this franchise. If you thought he wasn't the guy two weeks ago, cool. 13 games doesn't tell us anything except that they are results over process every time.

firing Redmond is not the answer. The ownership should fire themselves

I think the only problem with ownership is if you believe that they are deciding on baseball decisions. Oakland is a low pay-roll team yet is consistently making the postseason. I think the problems lie in the front office not being able to understand analytics and if they do not being able to sell them to ownership.

Loria becomes the deciding factor when he chooses to be. So many of our managers have gotten fired because he meddled with the teams day to day when he should've just stayed his distance.

The fact that we have the lowest payroll and might be paying 3 managers soon is awesome.

It's absurd that'll they'll eat a managers contract for any reason but when refuse to eat any of a players salary when it comes to trades

Here we go with the Marlins. Manager Mike Redmond already is on the hot seat due to the team’s 3-10 start, according to the Miami Herald. And right fielder Giancarlo Stanton is trying to be a vocal leader when, in the view of one former club official, that is not his style.

Stanton, perhaps acting out of a sense of obligation due to his $325 million contract, said Friday that "the fire was not there" with the Marlins. That might be all owner Jeffrey Loria needed to hear, and it’s no surprise that the fiery Wally Backman, the Mets’ Triple-A manager, could be a candidate to replace Redmond, according to the Herald.

When will Loria recognize that the unstable culture he fosters is part of the problem? Never mind that he signed Redmond to an extension through 2017 last Sept. 28. He dumps managers as if they are glasses of water, and based upon the Herald report, his frustration already is palpable.

                        Enough.

The season is less than one-tenth complete. Dumping Redmond, who is widely respected in the industry, would be a foolish overreaction. It’s quite possible that the Marlins are not as good as many of us thought.

Consider the rotation: Jose Fernandez is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, Henderson Alvarez recently joined him on the disabled list and Mat Latos has struggled after arriving in an offseason trade.

                        Not the manager’s fault.

If they fire Redmond, I'd like Lowell as a candidate. Have heard him speak about analytics on MLB Network and he sounds open to incorporating at least a little bit. That would be a huge step up.

Good to know, clearly he's not a candidate

He is NOT on the hotseat yet but if the team keeps it up he will be. While the FO is not happy with the team, they do not blame him for the bats not hitting anything or the fact the pen can't throw a strike.

If the team keeps sucking tho, watch for AAA Manager Andy Haines to get the job atleast till the end of the season. He coached many of these guys and is respected in the org
