  • 5 is definitely no. That starts into FA years for Fernandez, Yelich, Ozuna, maybe even Alvarez if he sticks. They can't devote that.

They can handle 4/$80, probably even $90 (assuming Haren/Cishek moves), without breaking out of the bottom 10 in payroll.

While the #Padres badly want James Shields, and are the favorites, they're being told several teams remain heavily involved in the bidding.
      come on.

      • He will end up in Chicago (Cubs)

@BNightengale: It's unknown which teams are left in the bidding process for James Shields, but one team was told that a decision is expected soon.

        • He's still going to be a Padres. Bet this is for leverage.

          • We are still in the bidding BUT not anywhere close to what he wants. We have an offer out on him but seems if SD wants him he is going there.

            • This impasse with SD seems like a good opportunity to jump back in and try and steal him. Seems like he isn't going to get what he wants, so if we can just outbid SD at the 11th hour we might be able to snag him.

One official involved in the Shields bidding does not expect the final numbers will be as high as $80 million/4 yrs. We'll see.
                Jeez.

                  • not to mention no tax in fl vs high tax in california...our deal could be the same and have a greater monetary value...we'd just have to worry about him wanting to pitch near home

                    • I have a gut feeling Chicago is becoming more realistic for Shields. And that would hurt the Marlins more than San Diego.

                      2. James Shields, RHP, free agent — Negotiations were going on late Saturday night. One major league source said Shields was “in the decision-making process.” San Diego had made an offer and Shields was deciding whether to take it or consider others. The Cubs, Marlins, and Cardinals also appear to be in the mix.

Dan Jennings #Marlins GM when asked if still in on Shields: "you never know if you're still in it or not in it until someone signs him"
                        heh, that's a great non-answer

                        • In other news, Joe Frisaro thinks we should sign KRod.

Frisaro was also the guy who suggested trading for Chapman earlier in the offseason.

                          • MIAMI — With James Shields likely heading to the Padres, are there any potential upgrades available on the market? The answer is yes.

Francisco Rodriguez is a free agent who could be a nice final piece to an already incredible offseason for the Marlins. If Miami can’t get that final boost to its rotation, then go for a reliever with a proven track record.

K-Rod, 33, had 44 saves with the Brewers last season. He would add another quality arm to the back of the ‘pen. While Steve Cishek is the closer, Rodriguez is a nice fallback option.

The Marlins actually came into $1 million when they won their arbitration hearing with Mat Latos.

Latos filed for $10.4 million, and Miami countered at $9.4 million. The ruling went in favor of the club.

Make no mistake, the Marlins were aggressive throughout in trying to sign Shields. They were hopeful to land the 33-year-old starter, who appears to have a better offer on the table from San Diego.

Barring something unforeseen, Shields will be headed out West instead of South Florida.

So that means the rotation shapes up as Henderson Alvarez, Mat Latos, Jarred Cossart, Dan Haren, and either Tom Koehler, Brad Hand or David Phelps.

It’s a strong unit. And one or two of those options may wind up in the ‘pen.

But if the Marlins want even more depth, K-Rod is a viable alternative.

So much is inaccurate about that article.

                              • Shields has an offer from us but his agent is telling SD that as long as they match it he is going to SD. He would rather play on the West Coast and if the money is like ours he will take it

Haren will be in ST and the FO is playing it off like he wants to pitch here BUT look for them to keep fielding calls on him. They have come to an agreement to which he will work out and then at the end of ST figure it all out

The KRod thing is weird? The last thing they need is more RP-actually already have 3 guys going to AAA they should be in MLB
