JCR: Fernandez to Undergo Season-ending Elbow Surgery
Again, no idea. But maybe it helps recovery time and/or, additional muscle mass takes stress off the joint so it can take more abuse? Have to feel its all connected at some physical level.
I don't think there is an answer, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a combination of everything - youth breaking balls, abuse in college (for those pitchers anyways), year round throwing, over throwing in between starts, winter leagues, strenuous workouts/steroids/etc. It's just how things have developed. It just sucks for us.
Is it possible that this sort of injury has always existed, but pitchers just pitched through it? Or that medical technology was not yet advanced enough to detect such an acute issue in the arm? And/or surgery was not available to remedy the injury. Just asking, don't know.
What's there to weigh? He has a tear. The only way to definitely fix it is to have surgery. Hell, the Pirates top pitching prospect Jameson Taillon had a "compromised" not torn ligament and he had the surgery.
To all my fans: you deserve to know that today, along with my family, I made The decision to undergo tommy john surgery. It was not an easy one, but with my condition it is the only option where I can return to the game I love as the same player I am temporarily leaving the game as. I'll be back as soon as my elbow will let me . And if anything... I have about a year to learn how to throw lefty You haven't seen the last of me Miami, I promise you that.

Had to post this. File this under the Mitch Williams is the dumbest fucking person in the world.
Host says that Eovaldi will now basically be the Marlins "ace" this season. Williams then chimes in and says "I don't know, Tom Koehler is really good".
