  • Speculation: September Call-up Thread

Since we can begin brining up players tomorrow, I figured this would be a good time to discuss September call-ups.

Fredi has already said that most likely, only players that have already been up this year will be called up.

Some players that we can be about 100% sure will be back are Badenhop (he's already with the team but not activated yet), Volstad, Gaby Sanchez, Miller and Maybin. I except VandenHurk to start on Wednesday so we can add him as well. Most likely, Chris Leroux and Brett Hayes will also return.

The question is when they'll return. Badenhop will be activated tomorrow and we know Volstad won't be back until he has made at least one start in AAA. I also expect him to return to the Marlins rotation after that since I don't think the team will put him in the bullpen. VandenHurk will likely keep that spot warm for a start or two before Volstad returns.

Miller could be called up tomorrow, too but the game summary for yesterday's NOLA game said that Miller is expected to join them today. Most likely, Miller will assume VandenHurk's AAA starter spot and get a couple starts in before being recalled (although, I did hear that Miller will be used in the bullpen for the Marlins).

Who else do you think will be called up? Do you agree with Fredi in only calling up guys that have already been up this year or do you think we should bring up guys like Stanton and Morrison?

Fredi doesn't really have a choice on who is called up. Sure, he'll have some input, but at the end of the day, his say isn't much.

The thing is, Mabyin was already on the 40 man and Gaby had to be put on the 40 man. Putting Logan on our 40 man already lowers our flexibility this offseason.

There's also the fact that he's not been doing too hot in AA lately and overall his season line, outside of his BB% and K%, is not that impressive. He very well could use a couple months in AAA next season, which then also just helps us keep him for another year, win-win.

The thing I want to see (and I know we won't do) is any player we assume to have a fair shake to win a job going into ST (be it Logan, or Stanton, or even Jeff Allison, or no one, I don't care) to get a September taste.

On the job training is tough. There's a tremendous amount of adjustment to life in the big leagues, and getting that first big road trip, and first trip into division rival cities, is HUGE to a player's development, whether they see a big league AB/inning or not.

Now, I know we won't do it, so I won't get my hopes up, but I do hope we do it.

Well, Morrison has to go onto the 40 man before the Rule5 draft. So the only thing putting him on now is, he boots one of the more inconsequential relievers.

Because you mention it, the "new" adds to the 40 man roster for Rule5 eligibility are:

Locks - Morrison, Winters, Cousins, Raynor (right? We'll protect him?)
            Possibilities - Sinkbiel, B. Stone, K. Harvey, G. Taylor, G. Burns, C. Mobley, J. Santos, J. Allison
I'm also not sure how Ceda works, but considering he's missed the entire season, I would guess he gets a medical exemption for 1 season like Harvey Garcia

The 40 man is in solid shape, if we add those four to what else we have:
-(for arguments sake on all of this, I am keeping two of the arbitration eligible bats, being Cantu and Ross. Think of this as an exercise in numbers rather than names if anyone is insane enough to argue roster orientation right now. thx!)

Right Handed Pitchers (14) - Badenhop, Johnson, Leroux, Lindstrom, Nolasco, Nunez, Sanches, A. Sanchez, Trahern, Tucker, Vanden Hurk, Volstad, Winters, Wood
Left Handed Pitchers (4) - Meyer, A. Miller, Pinto, West
Catchers (3) - Baker, Hayes, Paulino
Infielders (7) - Bonifacio, Cantu, Coghlan, Helms, Morrison, H. Ramirez, G. Sanchez
Outfielders (5) - Carroll, Cousins, Maybin, Raynor, Ross

So that's 33 "locks" as I see it. Sure payroll may dictate Lindstorm, or A. Sanchez, or even Paulino or Pinto are shipped off the island too, but this 40 man is based off a $40 million payroll for 2010 and we can mostly handle that here. Other maybes to add to the 'possibilities' list above are - Davidson, C. Martinez, Tankeresley, De Aza, J. Miller, and any other arbitration bats (Amezaga, Hermida, Uggla) they open the wallet to keep. If Davidson or Tank are fully healthy, I could see them sticking around to protect all our lefties. I can see Sinkbiel sneaking on their to see if his RP conversion works out, and maybe Harvey even though he is in A+ because he may have the Tim Wood effect there, but the rest are simply organizational depth for the most part. We'll take a few pieces back for the arbitration bat trades, probably bring in another veteran or two for the bench and bullpen, and roll the dice in the Rule5 for another young lefty.

Overall, I think the 40 man is in pretty great shape for the important stuff. I don't see us shedding any tears if Davidson or De Aza or C. Martinez are outta here.

            ---

Basically. I don't think the 40 man is an excuse for Morrison if they are legitimately going to let him fight for 1B/LF in March 2010. I agree completely that he probably isn't ready and could use 1/2 a season in AAA, but if they want to rush him, just call him up and roll with it. Freaking play him though and just don't let him sit there.

The white flag has been cast.

I'm a fan. Shut JJ and Ricky down.

I think we have to wait until after the Atlanta series is over. Than we can throw in the towel.

I suspect Hurk is only filling in for a week as I said in the first message of this thread. If we keep losing and are out of it next Monday when the AAA season ends, then Hurk could stay in the rotation and we can shut down JJ.

I'd hate to pack it in so early into September and throw a .500 season away, but Nolasco, Volstad and to a lesser extent Johnson could use an extra month off.

Also, I think if we are going to start resting starters, they be against teams that are out of it. I don't want to see two NL East teams and the playoffs and we 'owe' it to SF and COL.

how the fuck do you throw in the towel when you're 4 games out with a month left? Does the fact that we've been playing like absolute shyte and STILL within reach not say something? Unless you expect us to continue playing this poorly (and I don't see how youc an), that's silly.
                            Record when He pitches: 3-2

JJ is looking like he starting to get that late season fatigue, his era has been climbing. so im all for shutting him down.
