  • Update: Martinez Resigns Over Abusive Behavior

Marlins hitting coach Tino Martinez was poised to resign after a player notified the team Martinez became angry with him and grabbed him by his neck chain, according to multiple sources.

But sources said team owner Jeffrey Loria, who hired Martinez, nixed the idea, at least for now.

According to two sources, the agent of rookie second baseman Derek Dietrich, who was demoted last week to the minors, contacted team officials about the alleged incident, which occurred several months ago.

Dietrich’s agent, David Meter, would neither confirm nor deny that the incident took place.

“I’d rather not address it,” Meter said. “I think it’s a team issue.”

Marlins officials would not confirm that the team is looking into the matter.

“I’m sure if there is an issue, it will be addressed,” said Marlins spokesman P.J. Loyello.

Martinez and manager Mike Redmond weren’t on the field at the start of batting practice before Friday’s game. Instead, sources said they were discussing the Dietrich incident with Marlins front office executives.

One player, who asked not to be identified, said Martinez has been verbally abusive to other hitters during spring training and throughout the season, to the point that players have complained to Redmond about it.

“It’s all shocked everybody,” the player said. “He uses intimidation. It’s been a problem since day one.”

According to sources, other players who have been attacked verbally by Martinez include outfielder Justin Ruggiano, infielder Chris Valaika and minor-league infielder Matt Downs.

Martinez, 45, is a 16-year major league veteran and two-time All-Star who amassed 1,925 hits, mostly with the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners.

Though he had never coached before at the professional level until this season, he was Loria’s hand-picked selection to become the Marlins’ hitting coach.

The Marlins are the lowest scoring team in the majors this season.

Injuries and a lack of experience in the lineup have been singled out as the two biggest reasons for the team’s lack of offense. But one player said that the rift between hitters and Martinez has also had an effect.

“I think it’s definitely had an effect,” the player said.

The fucking owner with vast experience in art and business should not be hand picking hitting coaches, man.

You're trying too hard. I'm sorry.

The incident occurred several months ago but he waits until he is demoted to contact team officials about it.

To be fair, apparently the Marlins weren't the only team considering him as their hitting coach.

Hand-picked might mean he made the final decision from a handful of candidates, it could just be something a guy wrote, it could mean other stuff.

So, if Beinfest had hand picked him you would have thought it was good despite his experience, yes?

Just to be clear then, it wasn't the "no coaching experience" bit that made you LOL?

I don't remember any complaints about hiring Tino when it happened. It shouldn't matter who made the decision or the specifics of the decision. I think most people saw him as a potentially good hitting coach.

Hitting coach Martinez at odds with Redmond, players, fighting call to resign
By Juan C. Rodriguez, Sun Sentinel

MIAMI A question on the minds of several Marlins' players this week is why Tino Martinez still is the club's hitting coach.

A source confirmed Martinez has been at odds with several players and staff members, including manager Mike Redmond. It recently came to Redmond's attention that Martinez put his hands around Derek Dietrich's neck less than a week after his arrival in the big leagues.

A stunned Dietrich was at a loss about how to handle the situation. He chose to keep quiet and somehow managed to produce despite unimaginable duress.

Dietrich ultimately relayed the story to Redmond at his request. One other person witnessed what happened in the batting cage and corroborated Dietrich's account.

Last week, Martinez and Redmond engaged in a verbal altercation. Redmond has made it clear to management he wants Martinez out. Martinez was not Redmond's hitting coach choice, a point that's stuck in Martinez's craw. A source said several hitters have complained about Martinez's demeanor and abusive behavior.

Martinez, the source said, won't resign because he signed a three-year contract and would forfeit the money if he quits. The Marlins haven't fired him yet because they would be on the hook for the remainder of the contract.

The Marlins had no official comment other than the matter is being handled internally.

The Dietrich incident wasn't isolated, the source said. Martinez in spring training berated minor league infielder Matt Downs for working with then minor league hitting coordinator Greg Norton. Martinez took offense that Downs would take instruction from an unaccomplished big league hitter like Norton, who recently left the organization to become the hitting coach at Auburn.

Since spring training Martinez has displayed erratic behavior and mood swings that have prompted some to question whether he is bi-polar. Another person who's received firsthand accounts of Martinez's abuse wondered how a two-time All-Star and runner-up for the 1997 American League Most Valuable Player award with almost 2,000 career hits can harbor such insecurity.

Martinez also had incidents with several other players, including Chris Valaika, Chris Coghlan and Casey Kotchman, who Martinez at one point challenged to a fight.

Another player with more than a decade in professional baseball told the source he's never had a coach curse at him until Martinez did so this spring.

I met him years ago and know some of his family. Seemed cool but looks like he's a ass.

I hope Loria's kids and grandkids end up in a situation where their abusive boss ends up not being fired. What a piece of shit.
