Beinfest using the "I don't have any money to spend" card is no longer an option. He had money in 2005 and he had a pile of money to spend in 2012. He had several pieces to trade this offseason and took the first offer he got. A strategy is has gone on the record to defend.

Gillick wouldn't have been as successful as he was without having an owner willing to spend in Toronto, Baltimore, Seattle, and Philadelphia, but that is not an excuse for Beinfest to use.

I'm not really making an excuse for Beinfest. I'm just saying I don't really think a new GM matters as much as Loria not being the way he is.

Aside from Yelich and Stanton, they're all pitchers. So we're still not going to score any runs.

Marisnick and Dietrich to a lesser extent.

          Plus Profar and Olt.

              A lineup of

              C Brantly
              1B Lomo
              2B Hech
              SS Profar
              3B Olt
              LF Yelich
              CF Marisnick
              RF Ruge

seems possible. At worst, that team is slick as fuck in the field.
              --------------------
Plus defenders at 3B, SS, 2B, CF and LF. Possibly RF too.

If Beinfest doesn't bomb in the draft, Loria isn't forced to spend $120 million reviving a core that was falling apart. Loria deserves blame for not spending when the core was at its peak, as I've done various times, but Beinfest has never gone out and wooed anyone with a serious of moves to overcome this problem.

Didn't most people like who they signed last year? I assume that's why people on here and in the media were choosing the Marlins to win a bunch? Then they got super angry when they traded those guys away. So he failed both by signing the wrong guys (because they sucked) and by trading those awesome guys away (because they were too good to be traded for what they got). And now it's decided that the Blue Jays prospects are already shit?

The draft and the money are inextricably tied.

Like, the Red Sox are amazing drafters, because they spend tons of money.

Again, not making any kind of defense of Beinfest. But getting rid of Beinfest is a cure for a symptom, not the disease.

                      I know this.

But at this point, Beinfest is easier to get rid of than Loria. Firing Beinfest and Co. and replacing them with more capable evaluators starts a soft reset of the overall philosophy in baseball operations. While they would still be tied to financial constraints and it would adversely affect their results, some changes would be made. In 2-3 years when Loria sells, the infrastructure is in place and HOPEFULLY the rebuilding period is shortened. If Beinfest stays on for the rest of Loria's ownership, we are talking about 6-8 years before new ownership and hopefully competent front office complete the rebuilding process. That is my thought process on this. The longer they wait to fire Beinfest, the longer the rebuilding period will take.

I guess I just disagree that it would really make a tangible difference.

Especially because it's not like there's a lot for a new GM to rebuild right now. Whatever rebuild happens is going to be based one which players are in the organization for the most part.

Like, if a new GM comes in, he can trade Stanton and get different players, and that's the biggest difference. If they get high draft picks and Loria doesn't want to pay market value, it won't matter.

Couldn't we blame players for not reaching projections in 2005 and last year as the reason for sucking?

Mike Lowell, Juan Pierre and Al Leiter completely falling apart are probably to blame in 2005. Not really sure anyone could have or did see those things coming.
