As stated with the Blue Jays trade, that kind of materialized out of nowhere and happened almost instantly. They pushed it because of all the money Toronto was going to take on and by all accounts did little to no shopping around. They likely didnt get full value for Hanley/Choate but once again the Dodgers took on a ton of money. Same for Anibal/Infante.

I have no issue with them getting rid of bad contracts and players that wont live up to them. But the fact that they jettisoned players who did live up to their contracts along with them points to it being nothing more than a money grab and another way for Loria to line his pockets. It makes the spending splash in the offseason look like a "see, I told you I would spend money!" while the end result looks like the eventual money purge was premeditated after placating the fanbase and politicos.
