The Marlins-Blue Jays trade occurred on the eve of the latest Owners Meeting. Which led to some awesome junior high school cafeteria stuff. Ken Davidoff of the New York Post reports:
Loria, according to one industry source, sat alone in the lunch room, not conversing with his fellow owners. Teams from the American League East were unhappy that the Blue Jays improved dramatically, clubs from the National League Central and West were displeased that the four other NL East members would be able to feast on the carcass posing as the Marlins and there was a general sense of embarrassment over the Marlins cutting bait just one year after opening a new ballpark built overwhelmingly with public monies.
And if you’re the Tampa Bay Rays or Oakland Athletics, more than a sense of embarrassment. For them — and any other sports owner who may want to get a new stadium in the foreseeable future — there should be anger.
Loria, both with the way the stadium deal went down in Miami, and now with this cynical, soul-killing trade, has given anti-ballpark advocates a ton of ammunition. He has likewise rendered the old “we need a ballpark to be competitive, just wait until we have one!” pitch of team owners even more obviously hollow than it ever was. Which is great if, like me, you oppose public stadium projects, but really has to tick off those who want one of their own.

It sets a terrible precedent for him to veto it. There are legitimate reasons for a team to trade a bunch of stars. If we had this core together again next year and we lost another 93 games, wouldn't you feel different about the trade? If Loria plans on selling AT ALL in the next few years - I don't know why everyone is focused on right now - he just maximized his profits tremendously. Even in 3 years if he sells he's selling a team with almost no payroll liabilities as everyone will still be on minimum contract. That's a huge plus.
So let's say after their crazy spending spree over the last year the Dodgers go out and lose 93 games this year, then another 93 next year. They trade AdGonz and Crawford midseason, then in the offseason they move Kemp, Kershaw, Billingsley, Dee Gordon, and Ethier to the Yankees for a Heathcott, Betances, Banuelos, Marshall, Gumbs, and Russ Martin. The Red Sox cry "best interests of baseball! you did it for the Marlins trade!"
This trade sucks, it's indefensible and it hurts baseball, but the precedent that something like that would set is too strong.Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

I would laugh out loud if Selig actually did something right by rejecting this farce of a trade. My problem with the trade isn't so much why they did it but how they did it. Its the fact that they traded all these guys at once and got little in return. They would have been better off trading each piece one by one as the season went on if that was the direction they were planning on going in. Also, it shows they care very little about the PR nightmare this has created for the community. Pissing off your fanbase isn't exactly the way to go about making money.Last edited by Bobby Budnick; 11-15-2012, 12:48 PM.

lol this is amazing
the damage is already done. if they don't allow the trade the fans are still pissed off, the negative PR has already happened, the intentions are known, and honestly, they'll just find another way to move those guys piece by pieceOriginally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

Maybe Selig thinks that rejecting the trade makes Loria somehow more likely to sell?
Have to imagine he's getting the same kind of pressure from owners that Stern got before he rejected the Paul to Lakes trade.God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

Trade JJ and Buck because they're about to become FA's and you want to use them to build for next year. Don't trade the whole fucking team because you want to get rid of payroll and then tell the fans that this is a baseball move and that this move makes you a better team.
Only way this shouldn't be vetoed is if Loria tells Selig that he is planning to reinvest funds THIS year and is just restructuring the team. Our payroll should be $70-85MM per year, not $20 MM.
