I have been one of the biggest supporters of this FO, but this is pretty much impossible to defend. I will never stop being a fan of this team, but now I will entirely understand if some feel like jumping ship.
Regardless, I have seen some people say the Marlins actually got a fairly solid return here. I haven't really seen too much talk about the prospects we got in return in this thread (other than lou), so are there any other opinions on how good of a haul we got? I don't know too much about the guys we received.

Also, I fully expect ...J... to return to this site any day now.

Would be great if they got all these prospects and added $170 million (or even a portion!) to the books over the next 4 seasons as to field a team that could surprise if the Fernandez/Turner/Yelich/Marisnick/Morrison/etc class of guys start reaching their potential in a year or two.
Adding say four $8-12 million players to this team, would do wonders and would make "the dump" stomachable.
We all know that isn't going to happen though, rendering any baseball opinion on the trade ludicrous. Top 3 shortstop in baseball in his prime, and legitimate top end SP (plus good compensatory draft picks that are coming at minimum with Johnson), and they get (in a best case scenario which is not guaranteed), an above average center fielder, two back of the rotation arms/plus bullpen guys, a do everything utility player/fringe middle infield starter on 3rd tier teams, and a working class shortstop Yunel Escobar.
Like I said a few posts ago, purely baseball accounting for salary, they needed additional compensation with at least another top 25-75 level prospect in baseball, and good secondary arms that could develop into some role. That would make it "alright." These guys are not even close to Miller/Maybin prospect quality.
Simply put. If baseball people want to justify this, it's clearing payroll to get guys who can help and do something with said payroll you have dumped. Without using the payroll, this trade stinks. I said the same thing with Hanley. Use the payroll, and it could be alright.

Out of pure curiosity and, I will admit, an impish desire to stir up trouble, I called the Miami Marlins season ticket office a few minutes ago to see what, in light of the latest fire sale, the party line is among people trying to sell Marlins season tickets.
Figuring it has to be a rough morning for these guys, I played it straight up, merely inquiring about tickets, ticket prices and the like and didn’t try to give anyone a hard time. I wasn’t wanting to fool anyone, either. Just to see what sort of pitch was ruling the day. I did claim that I was interested in getting information about ticket pricing and availability, but did not say I was poised to purchase. I mostly just wanted to hear what they’re telling people today.
The upshot: the folks in that office are total pros. Honest. No baloney, but still doing their jobs and anticipating what is bound to be a lot of negative fan reaction.
The woman I spoke with was very pleasant. She talked up the ballpark and the experience of going to Marlins games and the enjoyable nature of baseball in general. There were no over-the-top claims of team quality or hard sells to be found.
Towards the end of the call I said that I noticed the news about the trade last night and asked if that had led to a lot of negative reaction. She was honest and said, yes, they’ve gotten some angry calls today and that some people were not renewing tickets (though this was not connected to the trade; just that, in general, not everyone was renewing, which is obvious). She mentioned that there was a staff meeting about the trade this morning to let everyone know about the latest news. She said that it’s understandable that some people are going to be upset, but that there were some good young players coming over in the trade so that, from a baseball perspective, there is a lot to optimistic about.
And all of that was true. It was quite refreshing actually. No b.s. coming from them at all. She followed up with a friendly email, again, noting that while some people are understandably having a hard time getting enthused, it’s a good time to get tickets.
If only the top of that organization was so honest, professional and pleasant.
How gullible do they think people are with that bold part.

I hope they use the payroll because then people will look funny. But I'd rather watch some new guys a few times who might be good at some point than a team that was going to be good at no point

She didn't push it as her big point and I have no problem with what she said.
I assume your problem is just the optimistic thing.

If anyone is interested in how this happened let me tell u.
The deal that was being discussed(which I gave a hint about yesterday)was JJ,Buck and Buehrle to Toronto for d'Araund,Nicolino,Arencebia and Alvarez. It was everything they wanted for them-Top Prospect and arm for JJ,cheaper Catcher and a young ML starter.
Then we decided to ask if they still had interest in dealing Escobar(stopgap 3B) which they said sure for Boner and instead of Arencebia we can choose Mathis or Wilson
The last part of the deal was Toronto asking about Reyes, they said they would take his whole contract AND send a Top Prospect of the Marlins choosing. Our response was if u take the contract, add Hechaverria, and the Top Prospect we got a deal.
Deal brokedown like this
Buck for Mathis
Boner for Escobar
Buerhle for Alvarez
JJ for Hechaverria,Nicolino,DeScalfani
Reyes for Marisnick
