HOUSTON -- Their run at history continued, but the Marlins took a step back in the standings.

Michael Bourn had three hits, scored twice, and made a couple of key defensive plays to lead the Astros to a 6-3 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night in front of 30,101 at Minute Maid Park.

In defeat, the Marlins continued their run at history. Emilio Bonifacio's bunt single in the seventh inning off reliever Jeff Fulchino made it 15 straight games in which Florida has collected at least 10 hits. The last team to do so was the 1937 St. Louis Browns.

The Marlins are three games shy of matching the most by an MLB team since 1900. The 1925 Indians and 1922 Browns each reached 18.

The Marlins are now 5 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the National League East and three games back of the Rockies in the NL Wild Card standings. The rubber game of the series is Thursday night.

Hanley Ramirez ripped a two-out single in the eighth inning off LaTroy Hawkins, pushing his hitting streak to 14, which matches a career best. The 25-year-old All-Star previously hit in 14 straight games June 24-July 7, 2008.

Jorge Cantu extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the first inning.

Rookie Sean West (4-5) suffered the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings.

Neither starter worked five innings. Houston's Yorman Bazardo, who came up in the Marlins' system, exited after 4 2/3 frames with Houston leading, 4-2.

In the fifth inning, West was replaced by pinch-hitter Gaby Sanchez with two outs and the bases loaded. On a 2-2 offering from Sammy Gervacio, Sanchez struck out looking.

The Marlins chipped back to 4-3 in the sixth off Fulchino, who also spent time in Florida's organization. Chris Coghlan tripled to open the inning and Ross Gload slapped an RBI double. The inning featured a terrific running catch near the wall in left-center by Bourn, who ran down a Cantu drive that would have been extra bases.
