Mathis must do something really well defensively because several organizations seem to like him a lot. Way too much, actually.

With the Angels, he seemed to get a whole lot of playing time even though they had Mike Napoli.

Toronto actually gave him the multi-year contract and then said he was the guy they didn't want to deal in that trade (had to be a lie).

Now with the Marlins, he's actually playing more than Brantly. Brantly kinda sucks, but you'd think a rebuilding team would want to play the 23-year-old catcher they got in a deal for Anibal Sanchez more than Jeff Mathis who's sucked his whole entire career.

I don't get what's made so many GM's value him in such a way.

This is crazy:

Of my 81 selected games, Mathis caught 41 times, Napoli 40 times. Mathis caught 865 pitches that were taken in the strike zone, and Napoli caught 806 pitches that were taken in the strike zone.

• Of those 865 pitches, Mathis got a strike call on 645 of them. He also got strike calls on 86 pitches that did not appear to be in the rulebook strike zone.

• Of Napoli's 806 pitches, he got the strike call on 591 of them. He also got strike calls on 75 pitches that did not appear to be in the rulebook strike zone.

• For every 100 pitches in the strike zone, then, Mathis got 84.5 strikes. For every 100 pitches in the strike zone, Napoli got 82.6 strikes.

That's around two pitches per 100 in the zone, or one extra strike call for about four or five games. You'd be tempted to say "only" two pitches per 100, but that's not an insignificant total. If Mathis catches 80 games, that's about 33 extra strikes he earns in a season. Dan Turkenkopf calculated the value of switching a ball to a strike at .161 runs, so 33 extra strikes would be worth about five runs in a season, or about a half a win.
