  • 2013 Payroll Expected to be Between $70-80 Million

Lower-than-expected attendance in the team’s new Little Havana stadium apparently will lead Loria to roll back on last year’s franchise-record $95 million payroll. Sources told the Miami Herald to expect a roster “somewhere in the $70 million to $80 million range.”

The Marlins already have 2013 salary commitments of $65.5 million for eight players: Josh Johnson ($13.75 million), Mark Buehrle ($12 million), Ricky Nolasco ($11.5 million), Jose Reyes ($10 million), Heath Bell ($9 million), John Buck ($6.5 million), Greg Dobbs ($1.6 million) and Jacob Turner ($1.175 million).
I know it's just speculation (beef) but if that's really the payroll and we can't move Nolasco/Buck/Bell this team is gon be incredibad

Apparently owner Jeffrey Loria is angry at manager Ozzie Guillen for comments Guillen made that were critical of Loria, according to a person who has spoken with Marlins officials.

Exactly what Guillen said that ticked Loria off is not clear.

But Loria didn’t like being, in the source’s words, “called out” by Guillen.

On Friday in New York, Guillen told reporters: “If Jeffrey doesn’t think I’m doing the job I should do … it’s not the first time he’s fired a manager,” Guillen said. “Look yourself in the mirror and ask why so many (bleeping) managers come through here.”

Last weekend, Guillen told reporters in Miami: “When you are in last place you need a better manager, better general manager, better owner, a better everything when you are a last-place team because we all failed.”

Guillen also said that day: “Whoever works for the Marlins and denies that he should be fired is full of (expletive). My coaches, myself, the front office, my players, we’re all involved in this thing. We all failed. And we’ve got to be better. Hopefully we learn by the mistakes we made and we move on.

“I can see good things happen soon. How soon is it going to be. The players will dictate how soon it’s going to be. Everybody in this ball club should look at themselves in the mirror.”

The general feeling around the Marlins the past few days is that baseball operations president Larry Beinfest’s job is safe and that Guillen is on the hot seat, which has been reported by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Miami Herald and mlb.com.

On Thursday, USA Today reported that Beinfest would be fired and that Guillen appeared to be safe.

Now, it appears as though Beinfest is safe and that Guillen might not return next year, the source confirmed. The source put the likelihood of Guillen not being back at “75-25,” based on his conversations with Marlins officials.

Again, it’s not clear which of Guillen’s remarks angered Loria. Guillen was on shaky ground before the team got to New York on Thursday’s off-day.

But if Guillen’s comment on Friday — that Loria should look at himself in the mirror about all the managers coming through Miami — was the culprit, it might end up being enough to prompt Loria to fire him after the season.

If that’s the case, it reminds me of Loria’s clashes in 2006 with manager Joe Girardi, who was fired and re-hired the same day after exchanging words with Loria during a game in August.

Girardi was fired after the season, then won the NL Manager of the year Award.

The Marlins have had six different managers since Loria took control of the team in 2002.

well if payroll is $80, and those 8 guys are $65.5....

Brantly, Morrison, Solano, Ruggiano, Stanton, Eovaldi, Cishek, Dunn, Ramos, Petersen, and Hatcher are all club controlled and combined go for around $6. Bonifacio will be $3, Webb $ 1, so that's $75.

    C - Buck
    1B - Morrison
    2B - Solano
    SS - Reyes
    3B -
    LF - Ruggiano
    CF - Bonifacio
    RF - Stanton
    B - Brantly, Dobbs, Solano, Petersen, ____

SP - JJ, Nolasco, Buerhle, Turner, Eovaldi
RP - Bell, Cishek, Dunn, Jennings, Ramos, Webb, Hatcher

So they'll have a few million to spend getting two veteran vagabonds to play 3B at an $80 million payroll.

This looks to me like a bottom 10 team in baseballl and bottom 1 owner.

That is before the winter meetings,JJ is prolly gonna be dealt for younger ML Ready Guys and IF a team calls, asks about Bell or Buck and would pay the salary they are gone to.

Loria and Samson are the two dumbest people to ever control a $400 million enterprise. The Marlins FO is a fraternity of the dumbest assholes ever who just so happen to run a baseball team. The lack of any accountability for anyone in senior management is disturbing. If Beinfest isn't fired or reassigned it just pushes the clock being competitive further back.

If they traded JJ and ate half of Nolasco, Buck, and Bell, they would shed $27 million in payroll 2013, and another $4.5 in 2014. If they could get a 3B and a young starter for JJ for right now, move Hand/Ozuna/other minor leaguers for Span, and sign a # 3 SP for a few years, and get a good bench behind the kids, that might not be to terrible. 2013 would be a nightmare, but it would make sense in a year.

I think the over/under at average attendance 18,000?

I'll take the over "officially" because of all the companies and businesses that will buy season tickets/people who are already locked in for next year

but in reality, I'd be shocked if we average 15k real bodies a game

There isn't a way to verify it that I know of, but O/U 5,000 season ticket equivalents that aren't businesses or brokers?
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

It's amazing how badly the Marlins FO fucked up the opportunity of having the new ballpark. After all the hype of 6 months ago they now have a team that literally no one, including some rather die hard fans here, give any shits about. We don't exactly have a bright near future either so it's not like things are going to pick up in the ballpark anytime soon. I don't think the attendance thing is even entirely the market's fault this time around, I used to watch this team every day and I stopped watching completely sometime in July; it's just too painstakingly difficult to give any fucks about the steaming pile of shit product this FO puts on the field. I'd rather watch Beef's cat for 2 hours than this team.

Also, just as a reminder, that $70 million payroll instantly shrinks to $60 million when you consider the money that goes to Heath Bell to contribute nothing at all.

This. It terrible how apathetic I have been to this team the last few months considering the excitement at the beginning of the season.

It will be close but I'm going with over.

I'm going to the game October 3rd! Party section!

I'm only going because it's the last game on my plan. We're seriously considering wearing brown paper bags over our heads for the first 2 or 3 innings.

I was originally going to renew my season tickets, but I decided against it. I don't want to give any of my disposable income to this team.

                            Yeah.

I'm losing my patience with this ownership group. If they keep the status quo in the front office and fire another manager, I'll be pretty darn close to quitting this team. And if they fail to extend Giancarlo, I'm almost certainly finished.

I've been a fan since the inaugural season, but I am growing tired of how they run this team. When they never extended Cabrera, I initially thought it was due to financial constraints. When the Forbes report came out, showing that they didn't really have any financial constraints, I thought it was part of their poker game for the stadium (in which case, I still disagreed with the decision, but at least I understood where they were coming from). Now, I'm coming to realize that it might have simply been incompetence. I live in Atlanta now, I can follow a properly run organization, instead of agonizing over every wrongheaded decision this team makes.
