Derek Jeter stepping down

This could be 1 of 2 things:
1) Sherman doesn't want to spend like Jeter intended, as has been mentioned, which is hard to tell with the lockout. They started spending, but need to do a lot more. Did Jeter want to go after the big guns (Correa, Seager, etc. level), and Sherman wouldn't approve?
OR
2) Jeter never intended to stick around and it was all public posturing to get ownership, make some money and duck out and join a "real"/bigger club - either via an ownership percentage or as CEO - after getting experience here. I recall us speculating for a while whether he'd stick around with the 5-year term he originally signed up for.

To be honest, I never liked jeter all that much as the figurehead of the team because of how he clearly tries to come off in public since his Yankee days. I feel much more comfortable with Ng leading the team than jeter. He was a good face of the rebuild i guess but he really didn't do much and never said anything interesting or of any consequence.
It's a big story because it's jeter, but i really don't think jeter was doing much here on a day to day basis anyways.

Jeter was far more than a figurehead. Despite his tiny investment, he controlled every baseball decision over the last four years. The whole front office, coaching staff, and scouting department are his people. There will be major repercussions throughout the organization. That said, I just want to watch baseball games.

Obviously Jeter knew Denbo, and was probably the biggest reason Denbo and others in the FO being hired, but based on what I've gathered since they took over the team, I'm much more likely to believe that Jeter was a very hands off boss, than "he controlled every baseball decision over the last four years."
As far as the coaching staff goes. Mattingly is still here, in case you haven't noticed, and hell we've only had one full year where Michael Hill wasn't here. This new regime has never completely "made it their own" IMO, which I'll never really understand.Last edited by Nick; 02-28-2022, 01:42 PM.

Marlins General Manager Kim Ng will now be the key decision maker in the organization. Previously all deals went through Derek Jeter, and he leaned heavily on Gary Denbo. Now, I believe Ng will have final say on the baseball side.
Denbo is going to be gone soon I would assume now as well.

Regardless of where this thing goes now, this feels like another fuck up on the part of Rob Manfred. The Mas group always appeared to be the stronger ownership group with deeper pockets, and ties to the area. Instead, Manfred went with the Sherman group almost certainly because Jeter was involved. Now, we're left with the lesser ownership group without Jeter. Manfred is such a buffoon.
