  • David Samson's Weekly Segment on Dan LeBatard's Show

Any fans of the show on here? David Samson has turned his post Marlins career into a relatively successful sports business podcast for CBS. He's maintained his Thursday segment on the Dan LeBatard to talk sports business, and movies. During the first wave of the pandemic they discussed his time with the Marlins and some things that happened behind the scenes. It was fascinating even if you had to take some of the things he said with a grain of salt. Off the top of my head:
    • Samson regrets not doing more when Hideki Irabu was an Expo.
    • Jeff Loria threatened to pullout of the Henry sale over a custom bus John Henry used to get to JRS from Palm Beach in. Henry eventually gave it up and Samson got it in the Jeter sale. Him and Conine have a charter business together.
    • Henry wanted to take Josh Beckett with him to Boston.
    • Jeff Torborg and his son were huge assholes.
    • Luis Castillo was notorious for not cashing his paychecks and being oblivious to the world around him. He didn't know what city he was in sometimes and someone was assigned to make sure he got to the airport on time.
    • Loria almost fired McKeon before the World Series over an argument that broke out as the team was waiting for the conclusion of Game 7 of the ALCS.
    • Samson found out Loria was divorcing his mom during the World Series because Loria told him not to let her in the clubhouse. If you rewatch the last out, Loria is hugging his body guard and not his ex-wife.
    • The City of Miami fought hard to get the name change to Miami Marlins. Problem is it was always their intention to do it and got the City to concede on a few points during the negotiation.
    • He regrets the Ali thing in 2012 and still doesn't know what Emilio Estefan did with all the money he received for putting together the opening ceremony.
    • He puts the blame for the Guillen, Bell, Buck, and Chen contracts squarely on Loria. (They don't seem to have any positive relationship.)
    • Samson partially blames himself for Jose Fernandez's accident for caving into Scott Boras' demands for an extra day of rest that resulted in him being off the night of the accident. He's been going to therapy to resolve that.

I enjoyed that, Party. Especially the Luis Castillo thing.
