  • 2020-2021 Offseason Thread

Figured with our elimination, I'd start the offseason thread for 2020-2021.

What's next for the team? Do we sign JT after having 0 confidence in Alfaro? Do we improve through trades? Through free agency? Both?

Would 6 years/$150 million get it done for Realmuto? If yes, I say you do it. You wanna send a message to South Florida fan base that you're not jerking them around? That's how you do it.

      I agree 100%.

You could also go after Lindor but he'll be twice the coast probably....or you could keep get 2nd hand guys and just barely scrape by hoping the draft picks/farm studs pan out...so far pitching is looking good but the bats...well not so good

I think there is about a 3% chance they sign JT. I believe they will make a trade for a decent C prospect.

At least 20 million to spend in FA/trades(Not saying they will BUT can if choose)
Have to add Jerar/Devers/Josh Roberson(Other arms too but younger)

We could see something like SD been doing-trade 2-4 guys for 1. Have to DFA like 8 guys just to get under 40 man limit

Smart move would be to see if can do a Marte trade again(Lindor!!!)

          Miami-?
Other team-Arm like Garrett or Rogers/OF(Burdick/Jesus/Jerar) and 2 other pieces

It'll be interesting to see if they add Roberson. I really like his stuff, but he'll be 25 in May and hasn't even made it to High-A. I find it hard to believe he'll be taken in the Rule 5.

I would absolutely do that if thats the price tag. IDK why though i think he might get either longer years or more money which im probably not willing to do. Id do anything less than 6 years though. I just dont want to get into the 8+ year range for a 30 year old catcher. That would be the most incredible move they could make though. That would instantly vault them into contender status.

Same, and i think its probably the right call unless realmuto doesnt get the deal we expect. I really think keibert ruiz makes a ton of sense for us. WIll smith is a beast at C for the dodgers and they even have diego cartaya at the position a little lower in the organization. They dont happen often in baseball but a prospect for prospect trade makes a ton of sense. Deal and OF or SP or 2 for Ruiz and call it a day at the position. He is major league ready and obviously would fit our salary profile moving forward more than JT, although that would be such an enormous move for more than just on the field reasons for the organization

I think they move on from Urena, Stanek, Steck, and possibly Aguilar or Dickerson and I highly doubt after his performance this year that they would have any issue DFA'ing Dugger or Yamamoto if they need the room.

Priorities need to be in this order for the offseason:

1- new plan at C. Whether its JT or a trade for someone like Ruiz from our OF or SP depth. Alfaro cannot be the starter, he is miguel olivo reincarnated with somehow worse plate discipline.
2- 1 decent veteran starter who can eat innings. We have at least 5 options out of the young guys but id add 1 small back end of the rotation option who would help prevent us from coninuing to rush guys like Garrett and Rogers and then Meyer next year in the event of some inevitable injuries. Give me someone who will sign a 1 year deal and can give you a lot of innings. I mentioned samardjizia as a guy i like but there are plenty of those types of guys available who would fit well at Marlins park.
3- If we dont sign a major free agent like JT, sign 2-3 impact relievers on short term deals. 2 years max. We have a few year window where we can give a few mid sized deals to free agents until our young guys start hitting arbitration. Use it to make impactful signings/trades that normally wouldnt be a great team building strategy in a small market. Especially given the young SP and the likelihood that we will be cautious with some of the younger portion of that group and not push them deep into games, an improved bullpen is going to be huge in determining whether we can compete in a 162 game season.
                        4. If there does end up being a DH next year and you dont get JT, i'd give a blank check to Nelson cruz and make sure he never sees the field. We desperately need to add slugging to this lineup

                        5. Judge what the market is like at the beginning of free agency. It might be that because of the lack of fans and therefore gate revenue this year, teams might not be likely to spend big bucks like they might normally do in free agency. If that is the case, try to snag this year's ozuna or donaldson. Impact bat who for whatever reason isnt getting a long term deal and can be available for 1 year. Allows us to make an impactful addition without creating long term potential for a prospect being blocked or an albatross contract that we can't afford.

In my opinion of equal importance as signing another bat is signing a few key guys to extensions. Can’t for the life of me figure out any downside to extending Anderson or Sandy in particular. Should be priorities 1a and 1B IMO.

Just wanna say it's still dope that the Marlins actually made the playoffs. Yes expanded playoffs and there's no chance in hell the Marlins finish over .500 in a 162 game season but there's a lot to be excited about. Tons of pitching options, a bunch of the offseason lineup signings came to play and earned another season on the squad, and who knows what hitting prospects will bust out similar to what guys like Miguel Rojas, JT Realmuto, Brian Anderson, etc... have done over the years.

I think there's a lot more stability with the current ownership. Obviously a horrible rocky start but I think Jeter's implementation of a bit of the Yankee way has done a lot of good for the franchise's long term goals. Culture matters...just look at the Heat organization and a bunch of the bad organizations around sports. I think culture has improved tenfold with the regime change.

And that is all. It's been fun being a part of this board on and off for basically a decade now. From my time being inside the organization to now just an outsider fan again it has been a fun ride and I'm excited to argue the future of the team once again with all of you. Cheers!

Doubt they move from Stanek and Steck unless still injured

Holloway,Urena,Brigham and Yamamoto very likely. Probably give Roberson a look as 25 with nice arm just alot of issues(injury/stamina/no season)

Think they do a 3 or 4 player(Young SP/Young OF and 2 prospects) for 1 bat trade and they would love a vet innings eater BUT they have 4 arms pretty much locked in and Elieser/Rogers/Garrett/Neidert/Castano as possible so highly doubt they go crazy for 1
