Does Gaby get the start today? Or will we go with Helms at third, Cantu at first? Assuming NJ doesnt play today

I imagine Gaby will take his old spot back. We've been missing a really good benchwarmer.

Maybe this isn't as all cut and dried as we thought.

"You really couldn't play any shorter than we have been," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "So we made the decision with VandenHurk. He isn't going to go [pitch] for five or six days. Bring Gaby up. He can play some first base and third base. And we stay away from Nicky."

Florida opened a three-game series with the Astros on Tuesday night.

While Sanchez is now with the big league team, how long he stays remains to be seen. The wear and tear of the season has led to uncertainty regarding the roster.

VandenHurk started in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader with the Rockies at Land Shark Stadium. The right-hander gave up six runs in 5 2/3 innings, and he was in line to start on Friday at Atlanta.

Now, the rotation isn't completely set.

Gonzalez said the team is considering a few different scenarios for Friday.

Anibal Sanchez, who threw 45 pitches in 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start with Double-A Jacksonville on Monday, could get the call. Another scenario is placing Johnson on the disabled list, which would then make it possible to recall VandenHurk and have him take the ball in the opener with the Braves.

Normally, players have to wait at least 10 days to be recalled after they are optioned. But that can change if a player is placed on the DL.

For Friday, Gonzalez essentially ruled out going with Chris Volstad, who pitched the first game of Sunday's twin bill.

"Friday would be his normal day in the rotation," Gonzalez said. "But we will probably go with him on Saturday, and give him the extra day. I think an extra day will do him good."

The Marlins were off on Monday, giving the team flexibility.

Anibal Sanchez, recovering from a right shoulder sprain, initially was supposed to get stretched out to about 100 pitches for Double-A Jacksonville on Monday. By design, however, the team limited him to about 50 pitches because he may be asked to start on Friday, which would give him three days of rest between starts. Gaby Sanchez, meanwhile, is ready to do whatever the Marlins need.
