  • What Should The Marlins Do In The Off-Season?

So this season was quite a flop in comparison to what the hopes were and now they finish off a season where they've traded Anibal, Infante and Hanley. The Hanley move leaves a gaping hole at 3B as well as a power bat (although he wasn't doing a great job of providing that) to go along with a need in CF as well.

So I pose this question to at least have some sort of discussion or even prediction as to what you think will be the plan going into next season. What do you think the Marlins will do to fill the needs on the team? What free agents or players would you like to see signed/traded in the winter? Understanding that there is a lot of time left till this all becomes relevant, I figured there isn't much else to talk about on this team other than watching some of the new guys that have been acquired and that's about it.

Here's a list of the 2013 free agents list if anyone is curious:

I'd give Rich Harden a real cheap contract with incentives.

I think Dan Haren could be available this off season. He'd be a good signing, IMO.

A bit early, but assuming they keep everyone

-BJ Upton/Melky Cabrera/Michael Bourn for CF starter 4-5 year contract
-Jhonny Peralta for 3B starter 2 year deal
-Yorvit Torrelba, 2 year deal to platoon catcher with Buck in 2013 / ease in Brantly 2014
-Andruw Jones/Jonny Gomes/Scott Hairston, 1 year deal to platoon with Ruggiano/Gaby(lomo shift to LF) in LF

Rest of position players all internal with Buck, Morrison, Bonifacio, Reyes, Stanton, Ruggiano, Gaby, Dobbs, and Solano.

Don't need pitchers. JJ, Buerhle, Nolasco, Turner, and Eovaldi, with a AAA Hand, LeBlanc and Sanabia capable of being stretched out in bullpen. Bullpen, Bell, Cishek, Mujica, Webb, Dunn, Sanabia, and LeBlanc. I think those later 2 out of options so they get first crack.

Not very sexy signings except maybe the CF, but that would be a substantial upgrade over Cousins, D. Murphy, Hayes, and B. Petersen who they replace, and with hopeful significant improvement from Morrison, Reyes, Buck, Gaby, and no two month injuries to Stanton and Bonifacio, I would hope the offense moves to middle of the pack and not bottom 3.

If we sign Jhonny, I may go mibs/Volstad level on everyone.

                    I know that but he's a risk. He's a guy I'd take a chance on.

Dont want any of those CFs especially on 4/5 year deals.
Torrealba would probably get close to his $3.5 million he is getting this year again next year, and he simply isnt worth that. He is basically Buck with marginally better OBP skills but much less pop. They would combine for a legendarily bad catching duo.

Yeah, Torrealba is a big downgrade from Brett Hayes.

Big whoop, hes marginally better than Brett Hayes. Torrealba is still terrible and costs about 6 times as much as Hayes.

I don't think Torrealba is getting anything significant in free agency next year, and Hayes does hit arbitration and has a lot of service time so he will rise. It's not going to be a big discrepancy. Yorvit has around a .725 OPS last 350 PA vs RHP. Buck historically hits lefties. That is a good 60 games they can put Yorvit on RHP and hope for the best and allow Brantly all the time in the world to hit AAA pitching.

I think post the trades, team will look

                              Buck
                              Morrison
                              Bonifacio
                              Reyes
                              Cox
                              Veteran Platoon LF
                              Significant Free Agent CF
                              Stanton
Dobbs, Ruggiano, Veteran C, Veteran 2B/3B, Gorkys

                              LF - A. Jones/Gomes/Hairston
                              CF - BJ/Bourn/Melky
                              C - Torrealba
2B/3B - Macier Izturis, whom allows Bonifacio to be constant rover at 2B/3B/LF and performance dictates who sticks at 3B and LF

SP - JJ, Buerhle, Nolasco, Turner, Eovaldi, with Hand in AAA
RP - Bell, Cishek, Webb, Dunn, LeBlanc, Sanabia, and it wouldn't hurt to get a veteran RHP to be 7th inning guy

Very unsexy, but that could be a middle of the pack offense, and the kid pitchers could surprise. I like JJ and Nolasco in walk years also. Pitch for the paycheck boys.

                              We'll see
