One executive says he expects the #Rangers, #Angels and #Dodgers to all land an impact starter by the deadline.

    • Many good starters are available: Greinke, Garza, Dempster, JJ, Shields.

I think JJ is the most expensive too. He's signed through 2013.

I believe Garza is Arb eliglible.

      • Don't think Garza is one of them. He's hurt.

Lots of debate in front offices over the availability of Josh Johnson. I think #Marlins would move him, but price is extremely high.
        Jerry Crasnick ‏@jcrasnick
"They want a ton,'' said one GM. Johnson is signed for $13.75M next year, so that gives #Marlins a lot of leverage.

        • Lou you realize we could always flip assets for a young 3B/2B; we need to get the best available deal possible not the deal that fills the hole.

That's the way a team that is NOT on a fire sale works. SUCK OUR DICK, media.

            • You're right Z, having a $100 millionish payroll after handing out (approximately) $190 million in guaranteed contracts 8 months ago and then taking a scorched fucking Earth approach at the deadline is exactly how teams do it. Taking the best (best used lightly, of course) offer on the table that eats all the remaining money to your second most productive hitter on a team starved for offense doesn't reek of desperation to unload backloaded money. Not one bit.

              COMMENCE THE DICK SUCKING!

They don't need to get the best deal possible. This isn't a dump. Trading Johnson when he is signed next year for less then "perfect" package, means this is a rebuild, not restructure as they phrase it. Now if they can get out of Nolasco/Bell/Buck... whatever you can get regardless of position. Those are "best deal" possible guys and hope to not pay half the contract. Johnson is different. Johnson you get blown away with exactly what you want, or keep him.

It's pretty easy. Keep him unless you get the "sizemore, phillips, cliff lee" trifecta for bartolo colon.

So you are saying you would rather a A 3B B+ SP and some throw ins rather than two A SP and a B SP and a throw in? I understand this isn't a dump. I am not saying just take the best deal and dump him. I'm saying that we shouldn't rule out packages because they lack a 3B. If we can get significantly more value from another team that doesn't have that good 3B to trade we should still make the trade especially if its starting pitching. We can always make a deal for the needed asset later. And with next year looking like it's being used more for evaluation and 2014-15 would be the go all in years, it makes filling the whole that much less of a necessity. We should take top value offered regardless of positional need right now.

Three players. One free agent. One average player. One guy getting 15m to OPS .750.

                    What?

Sources say the #Marlins are asking for each team's top 2 or 3 prospects in every trade scenario involving Josh Johnson.
                      Jerry Crasnick ‏@jcrasnick
We're talking Jurickson Profar-Travis D'Arnaud types just to get talks moving, then a lot more beyond that. #marlins

So unless the #Marlins lower their sights considerably before Tuesday, that doesn't bode well for Johnson being dealt.

And yes, that would mean Dylan Bundy or Manny Machado of #orioles, if not both. #Marlins aiming high, to put it mildly.

                            • So I guess the chances of Johnson being traded are rather slim then.

                              • I hope he's still here on the first of August, and this goes a long way towards reassuring that
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.
