Back on topic...If I see Bell back in the 9th inning for a close situation before he proves himself otherwise, I will lose a big amount of respect for Ozzie.

I understand that he has to work through it, but we need every win we can get. We've dug ourselves into a pretty deep hole and now isn't the time to be experimenting with stuff.

It might not be Ozzie's call.

Yea, I've though of that too.

        Good point.

Loria and Samson are pulling the strings on Bell. Ozzie would have called him out if otherwise.

I don't think this is a Jorge Julio "use him, dammit" situation. I have never, and I mean never, seen a player who has been criticized as much as Bell by the people who usually avoid criticizing players. Samson on LeBatard tore him apart, Rich and Tommy are trashing him pretty regularly and Glenn Geffner who's basically the team's Jason Jackson (unabashed apologist) is even going after him. All of it is warranted, make no mistake there, but it's so out of character for the organization. Leiter got no flack, Julio didn't, Kevin Gregg when things were bad...anyway, you get the point.

I think, obviously, Bell's here because no one's taking that contract and we're not DFA'ing him in year one, so really the only question is how far does he fall on the depth chart and how long before he's given another shot? I really don't think it's a mandate coming from the FO that Bell be continually trotted out there.

I think all issues are solely based on the contract he signed and just the complete disappointment and disbelief of how he has performed. The stakes are higher these days.

Well the contract obviously creates expectations, but the duration of the contract also suggests a need to "play nice."

The other players trash and DFA. It's petty, I guess, but what do you have to lose? Bell's here for at least 3 years, probably 4 because the option's supposedly a piece-of-cake to reach. If he's here that long, do you really want to start creating animosity in the first month of his tenure?

Also, let me make this very clear, I am not defending Bell.

I still don't believe that he's just completely lost it. I know there was a bit of drop last season, but to turn into this? No way.

There's something going on, mental or physical, and I think its correctable. But they can't keep running him out there in the 9th. Either DL him and send him to extended ST or make him work out of it in mop up opportunities.

There's no defense for him right now, but I also don't think we're just completely stuck with a 3 year albatross now yet either.

He was pretty good in spring wasn't he?

                    I agree Huggles

I think you have to put him in a setup role where he'll face moderate leverage situations. It's less of demotion and hopefully relieves some of the pressure. Maybe he rounds into form. If he shits the bed there, gods help us.

I don't think he's lost it completely either but I won't let that stop me from bashing him/Loria/Beinfest, because giving a reliever nearly 30m (or potentially more) is fucking stupid.

Good post but if the FO is not mandating that Bell be brought out to close then who is? The Easter Bunny?

Guys, another option, other than the Easter Bunny, is that there is not necessarily a mandate but that it is just a decision made by Ozzie.
