  • A young minor league pitcher, who had the opportunity to be teammates with Marlins rookie Mike Stanton for a few days earlier this season, had this to say about the 20-year-old baseball prodigy.

"The ball makes a different kind of sound when it comes off his bat."

Wednesday night, that sound was thump, thump, thump, as Stanton had one of those days that is basically unprecedented for someone as young as he is.

With his 5-for-5 day, he became the first player to go 5-for-5 while under the age of 21 since Claudell Washington for the 1974 Athletics. Hank Aaron once had five hits as a 20-year old, but his game wasn't as good as Stanton -- It included an out. But a few Hall of Famers do make a Baseball-Reerence.com list of players to do it: Fred Lindstom, Arky Vaughan, and the baseball legend Roberto Clemente.

          • He's got to be in the ROY discussion now, right?

For fun: Heyward, .827 OPS, 12 HR, 51 RBI in 91 Games

Stanton: .850 OPS, 11 HR, 35 RBI in 52 games.

            • He's going to need to go on a ridiculous tear I think. And as stupid as it sounds, his average is probably gon have to hit .270ish for voters to care.

              • Sure, he can be discussed.

                • Yeah, I agree, but you figure right now it's Strasburg's to lose (dumb, but whatever) but he probably gets shut down before the end of the year. So it's basically Heyward, Davis, Stanton and Jaime Garcia from the Cards, but you don't hear crap about him.

Of those three, only Stanton and Davis seem to be relatively sure things to top 20 homers (the rookie magic number) so I think you're right that it basically comes down to Stanton getting above .270.
