      • I'm pretty ready to give up hope that we have a clue:

Fleming said it is the same story with prized 20-year old outfielder Mike Stanton, who despite hitting .337 with 13 homers and 29 RBI in 26 games won't be leaving Jacksonville anytime soon. "There's no thought of moving him up to Triple A just yet," Fleming said. "We're being patient."

Fleming said Stanton isn't the only prospect playing well for the Suns.

"Mike Stanton has really overshadowed what Ozzie Martinez has been doing," Fleming said of Martinez, a 21-year old shortstop from Puerto Rico. "He's hitting .375 and playing terrific defense for us. You also have Alejandro Sanabia. He is [2-0 with a 1.15 ERA] in five starts."

        • He will be here by June. There's no way we can deny calling him up if he continues at this torrid pace.

          • Meanwhile, Cameron Maybin continues to be completely worthless at the major league level. But yeah, we should keep Stanton where he is until he drives in like at least 364 runs, he just hasn't proven himself at AA yet.

            • In the Marlins defense, he still is whiffing in 30% of his AB. Yea, when he actually hits it holy crap and he's certainly walking up a storm which is awesome, but he still has a ways to go before the MLB level.

If there isn't much of a difference between AA and AAA as some of you argue, what's the big deal for one, and secondly, the AAA outfield is full with Raynor, Cousins, and Petersen. Not that they shouldn't be pushed aside for Stanton when the time comes, but if Stanton is still figuring out breaking pitches, so be it.

And Maybin needs his fair shot. On the job training always sucks, but what can you do. Stanton will probably strike out more even if he hits the occasional dinger.

              • Stanton is hitting .174 on the road in AA... maybe they want to make sure he can hit somewhere else outside of Jax's park before bringing him up. lol

                • from Jayson Stark:

Phenom watch: Heading into the season, the Marlins appeared to have Mike Stanton, their 20-year-old long-ball machine, ticketed for at least half a season in the minor leagues. Now, we're hearing mounting buzz that he could show up in the big leagues as soon as this month.

It isn't every century that you see 20-year-olds obliterate Double-A pitching the way Stanton has (13 homers in 26 games, .337 average, .480 OBP, .821 SLG). He just finished a 10-day homestand in which he went 17-for-33 (.515) with nine homers, 20 RBIs and 14 runs scored. And after a series against the Mississippi Braves last weekend, Mississippi manager Phil Wellman told the Jacksonville Sun: "He looks like a 15-year-old playing on an 8-year-old's Little League team."

"If they [the Marlins] get him up to the big leagues now," one baseball man said, "you could have one of the greatest rookie-of-the-year races in the history of the National League, between him and [Jason] Heyward."

If the Marlins do call up Stanton, they'd be likely to install him in right field, move Cody Ross to center, and either split left field between Chris Coghlan and Cameron Maybin or send one of them down.

Future shock: If Stanton were to get called up before Memorial Day, the first reaction of many people in baseball would be shock. No, not that the Marlins were calling up a 20-year-old. That they would be willing to take a chance that Stanton could turn arbitration-eligible a year early (after 2012), as a "super-two" player. But hold those shock waves, says an official of another NL team.

"How do we know there will even be a 'super-two' rule three years from now?" he asked. "How do any of us know what the rules will be three years from now? … Trying to predict something like that is ridiculous [when there will be a new labor deal in place by then]."

                          • From BaseballProspectus:

While Mike Stanton has been one of the biggest stories in the minors with a .337/.480/.821 line and a minor league-leading 13 home runs, one scout who recently saw him thinks the Marlins shouldn't be so quick to get him to the big leagues.

"I'd like to see him get out of some of his current funks and get back on track before moving him to Triple-A," said the scout. "He's still getting himself out on some bad pitches, and that's not something you see from prospects that are ready. I'd give him another month here and let him work on his breaking-ball recognition for another month or so before moving him up to Triple-A."
