According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Marlins are concerned about the condition of Emilio Bonifacio.
Bonifacio is working his was back from a thumb problem and has yet to be cleared for baseball-related activities. If Bonifacio struggles in his rehab, Olney suggests the Marlins will look to acquire someone who can play center field regularly, and ''would be among the first in line'' if the Twins decide to market Denard Span. The recently-promoted Scott Cousins and Justin Ruggiano will continue to split playing time in the short-term.

CF Emilio Bonifacio was cleared by a doctor to hit off a tee and play catch. Bonifacio has been on the disabled list since May 20 with a torn ligament in his left thumb. "He likes the way it looks," Bonifacio said. "I'm feeling great." Bonifacio still is looking at a post All-Star break return.

CF Emilio Bonifacio said Tuesday he will not play anymore this year. Bonifacio, on the disabled list since Aug. 22 with a sprained right knee, had hoped to return to action in the final two weeks of the season.

He wants to play in the Dominican Winter League, but he said he won't do that because the Marlins don't want him to risk aggravating his right knee or left thumb. He played in just 64 games this year and spent two other stints on the disabled list with a sprained thumb. He finishes the year batting .258 with 30 stolen bases while playing center field and second base. Last year he batted .296 with 40 stolen bases in 152 games.
