Asked Tuesday if he anticipated handling Josh Johnson differently during the season because of his injury history, manager Ozzie Guillen said the right-hander would dictate that.

“The only thing I want from him is to have confidence in us,” Guillen said. “He can come to us and say, ‘Listen, I need a day. Can I skip a start?’ I don’t want him to go up there and be a hero and all of sudden we don’t use him for the next 20 days. I’d rather lose him for a day, two or three days, than lose him for 20 or 21 days.”

Johnson in 2011 made nine starts, the last coming on May 16, and totaled 60 1/3 innings before a shoulder issue sidelined him. During his two All-Star seasons (2009-’10) Johnson threw 209 and 183 2/3 innings, respectively, and Guillen anticipates him reaching that plateau again.

“Are we going to monitor him? Yes,” Guillen said. “I’m not going to say we have to be careful with him, but we’ll be monitoring him pretty close…In my mind, I’ve got this man throwing 200 innings and winning 21 games. That’s my mind. Is he going to do it? That’s everybody what they want. He wants that, but we will see what he is.”

Quite a fish story for Miami Marlins pitcher Ryan Webb

Relief pitcher Ryan Webb and his girlfriend Lauren Stafford were the most visible people in the Marlins clubhouse this morning, and not necesarily by their choice.

And it’s all because Stafford outdid Webb and his friends at a fishing pond in Tarpon Springs by hooking a 10-pound largemouth bass.

As Webb tells it, he had been trying to get Lauren to go fishing with him at his favorite pond, located in his best friend’s back yard.

“When we were in high school, we built a dock to it and we stocked it with fish,” he said.

“I’ve been trying to get Lauren to fish for us for a long time, because it’s place we’d go to have bon fires and fish and it was just lot of fun.”

Finally, Lauren went fishing one day over this past off-season. “She was the only one who caught fish all day. And on her last cast of the day, she reeled in that.”

It measured 23 inches and “a little over” 10 pounds,” Webb said. “We’ve never seen anything that big (from that pond).”

Webb’s fish tale might’ve ended there if he hadn’t shown a photograph to his agent, Joel Wolfe, at dinner one night a few days after Lauren’s big catch.

He arrived at Roger Dean Stadium this morning to find a package at his locker. He opened it and saw a large blown-up print of the photograph of Lauren and Webb holding the fish Lauren caught.

Closer Heath Bell saw Webb holding up the giant photo as Marlins teammates started arriving in to the clubhouse to prepare for today’s workouts.

“As soon as I opened it up, Heath goes, ‘You better put that away. You don’t want anybody to see that.”’

It was too late. Reliever Edward Mujica grabbed the poster from Webb and hung it up in a prominent spot in the clubhouse for all to see.

“After today, it’s going up in his bedroom on his wall,’’ joked pitcher Mike Dunn.

Lauren was recently promoted at Procter & Gamble. “Maybe she’s found a back up plan in fishing!” Webb said.
