People can be fans of anyone or anything for any reason and can stop whenever they want. Choosing to do so doesn't mean they weren't a real fan or whatever. Furthermore, I can think of very few reasons more deserving of abandoning being a fan than one's favorite player getting traded. Sometimes a player is your attachment to that team. Fuck, I wouldn't be here if Pokey Reese had had a nice, long career with the Reds.
