So he'll tell Christian Yelich to no-show events in 2014?

But it's not anything close to "fantastic news." Guys like him are pretty easy to find. See: Dobbs, Gregg 2011.
It doesn't matter if they're easy to find. We still signed a good bench bat (and probably one of the better ones in the league) which was something we really, really needed. It's not like bench bats aren't important.

He's certainly not one of the better bench bats in the league.

I agree with bobbob. He had a great season as a sub last year (OPS .937) but in 2010 and 2009 he OPSed under .500 as a sub. As a pinch hitter in his career his OPS is .747 which is fine. His BABIP shows he was lucky in his good years and unlucky in his atrocious years which is expected. If he was put up relative consistent numbers through the years around his career line 2 years wouldn't bother me but when you're easily replaceable and clearly inconsistent no matter how much luck has todo with it, a second year just seems like money not invested wisely. I can't really speculate what the club will do but if he hits .500 until July and the club DFA him, the club will be on the hook for the contract. If he is on a 1 year deal the DFA is a no-brainer. His luck can change from year 1 to year 2.

It really doesn't matter if the club is no longer pinching pennies but when you can find plenty of decent bench bats it makes it hard to accept the fact that we're guaranteeing money to a player who has been inconsistent throughout his career and is at an extremely volatile position.

Hopefully Dobbs just has 2 extremely lucky years.

Sad for him. He's a good guy, he doesn't deserve it.

I just texted Villy to apologize to him.
