      • MILWAUKEE -- Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest walked into a seventh-floor room at Milwaukee's Pfister Hotel on Day 2 of the GM meetings on Tuesday evening, noticed a large media contingent approaching and said,"Holy cow."
Beinfest, in his ninth season as Marlins GM, began his trademark profuse sweating shortly thereafter.

            • ESPN's Jim Bowden tweets that Jose Reyes' representatives are in possession of a second offer in addition to the one from the Miami Marlins. Bowden doesn't specify from which club, but leaves open the possibility of it being from the Mets.

Bowden cautions, though, that it's early in the process.

UPDATE: Asked if there was any major news -- be it an offer to Reyes or otherwise -- a Mets insider said Tuesday night, "No, there's nothing."

Hearing we are still early in reyes process. #marlins offer of $80/90M for 6 won't do it. reyes should get $100M-plus, and maybe $20M per

                            • • The Miami Marlins are said to have a good feeling about their chances to sign Jose Reyes. But even they know they will have to do better than what was described as a "preliminary'' offer. Sources suggest it was actually less than the reported $90 million over six years by $10-to-20 million. However, Miami is thought to be eventually willing to come up to $90-to-100 million on a five-year deal. People familiar with their situation continue to describe the Albert Pujols offer as a lowball special designed to work only if Pujols has some incredible and unknown desire to play in Miami. While he is said to have a grandmother in the South Florida area, people who know him say he'd prefer to remain with St. Louis, all things being equal. The Cardinals met with Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano, here, but there continues to be no evidence that they are willing to consider a big boost in their preseason offer of about $200 million over nine years.

                              • The newest rumor to speculate about:

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Marlins' recent offer to Jose Reyes was less than $90 million.
Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reported earlier this week that the Marlins offered a six-year, $90 million contract, but Heyman hears that it was actually $10-20 million lower. However, he also hears that the Marlins may eventually be willing to improve their offer to $90-100 million over five years. Most assume Reyes desires a contract north of $100 million, so look for him to shop around until he gets the deal he wants.
