  • I don't think I'd do Lomo for Shields. If I'm trading Lomo it's for someone still in their club-controlled years. That would hurt payroll flexibility a lot.

St. Louis will probably throw the safe at Pujols now after the World Series, Fielder is likely going to command more money than we can give unless we increase payroll to well over $100 million (which isn't too likely) and the Yankees are going to go after pitching and we all know that they can outbid us 6 ways from Sunday. Reyes may be the best fit for us but there's no guarantee he comes he, either. You can't just say we'll get these guys because we need them and are going to spend more money this season than the last few. We still have to be smart about the deals we offer. We don't want to do what the Nats did with Jayson Werth last year just to say we signed someone.

Yep. Even if you hate the guy and want him gone the best course of action is to let his bat blow up and then get a shit load for him.

Just keeping it real. Forgive me for not getting all hot and bothered like everyone else around here about players we're not likely to get.

          • You're right. It would be a shame to get swept up in something as ridiculous as the most exciting time to be a Marlins fan since 2003.

                  • I hear he is making 0 starts against the Phillies this year, which will make him practically an ace

Incorrect. We are likely to get one or more of these dudes. It's gonna happen.

                        • As the pitching market turns…
The Marlins and Blue Jays are the teams most aggressively pursuing trades for starting pitchers, according to major-league sources.
The Marlins also were meeting with free-agent left-hander Mark Buerhle on Tuesday, but the competition to sign Buehrle is intense, sources say.
Three big-money AL clubs - the Yankees, Red Sox and Rangers – are among the teams said to be interested in Buehrle.
As for the Jays, their pursuits of both starters and relievers is standard operating procedure for general manager Alex Anthopoulos.
“Alex is always looking for everything,” one rival GM said. “He is the only GM in the league with a 60-man roster – and I say that as a compliment.
“You can’t pin him down. He has interest in every one of your players.”
The starting pitchers who are known or thought to be available in trades include:
*Rays right-handers James Shields and Wade Davis.
*Athletics lefty Gio Gonzalez and righty Trevor Cahill.
                          *Braves righty Jair Jurrjens.

*White Sox righties John Danks and Gavin Floyd.
                          *Cubs righty Carlos Zambrano.
                          *Dodgers righty Chad Billingsley.
                          *Astros lefty Wandy Rodriguez.
The availability of Rodriguez will become clearer if Jim Crane is approved as owner at the owners’ meetings next week in Milwaukee.
Crane is willing to move Rodriguez, sources say. Drayton McLane, who would remain owner if the deal fell apart, is more reluctant to make a deal.
