New manager Ozzie Guillen’s Miami Marlins’ coaching staff is taking shape. According to a source, third base coach Joe Espada and bullpen coach Reid Cornelius will be retained. They’ll join bench coach Joey Cora, who worked with Guillen in that capacity with the White Sox, and Marlins’ holdovers Randy St. Claire (pitching) and Eduardo Perez (hitting).
Brandon Hyde, who was promoted from minor league infield coordinator to major league bench coach after Fredi Gonzalez was fired in June 2010, appears to be out. Whether the Marlins offered him another position within the organization is uncertain. It also appears first base/infield coach Perry Hill won’t be returning either, in part due to a chronic knee problem that is limiting his mobility.
If Hill does not return, the Marlins could shift Espada back to infield coach. He began overseeing the club’s outfielders when Hill re-joined the staff last season. Espada, Hyde and Hill could not be immediately reached.
One name on the grapevine for a possible first base/outfield coach job is Gary Thurman. Since 2008, Thurman has served as the Cleveland Indians’ minor league outfield/base running coordinator. Marlins President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest knows Thurman from their time together in the Mariners’ organization.
