It's important to clarify that this only impacts about 50% of the player's salary. MLB players are considered performers. Away games are treated as income earned in the state where the game is played.

What's the sales tax like in Florida?

Tennessee has no state income tax and when I moved there I was like oh fuck yes. Then had to pay 9% sales tax on everything, including food (food is not taxed in Ohio). My money goes further here with an income tax than it did in TN without one.

I doubt this would be true on a baseball players income though.

Food isn't taxed in Florida either, unless it's something like soda
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

I think food in super markets doesn't get taxed. But if you buy something prepared for you it gets taxed. Even if you get food from the deli like the subs, fried chicken, etc that has tax. But if you buy food which you have to prepare yourself it is mostly untaxed. I am not sure what the official categories break down to, that is just what I have noticed from receipts.

Prepared food is taxed. Unprepared food is not taxed.

                          I'm talking about grocery shopping.

In TN, you're taxed 9% on groceries.

There was a proposal a few years ago to eliminate all property taxes in Florida in exchange for a sales tax near that figure. 50% of sales tax revenue is paid by people visiting Florida.
