It's just a good thing that we had that off day on Monday. That allows us to not need to call up a starter until either one of the games Monday or Tuesday depending on if Volstad doubles up with Vazquez for Monday's double header in New York or if he pitches Tuesday to get the rotation back in order.Comment

Actually, I was wrong before about the off day. I forgot Ricky pitched Tuesday. We would need another starter for game 2 of Saturday's double header unless Ricky goes on short rest. If he doesn't, Ricky and Vazquez could take the two games of Monday's double header and Volstad would then pitch Tuesday.
So, do we call up a starter for game 2 Saturday or go with another bullpen day with Hopper starting now since Sanches is on the DL?Comment

Hurricane Irene prompts more re-schedulingEven before its first gusts hit the Eastern seaboard, Hurricane Irene sent an already topsy-turvy Florida Marlins’ schedule end over end.
Sunday’s series finale at Citizens Bank Park earlier this week was re-scheduled as part of a split doubleheader Saturday. With heavy rain and wind expected to hit Philadelphia sometime Saturday afternoon, officials on Friday afternoon postponed Saturday’s nightcap. It will be played on Sept. 15, a shared off day for the two teams.
The Marlins will now have to return to Philadelphia for the makeup game between three-game sets in Atlanta and Washington. What was a nine-game, three-city trip, which starts Sept. 9 in Pittsburgh, is now a 10-game, four-city trip.
“I am not in favor of hurricanes,” manager Jack McKeon said. “They’re not my favorite. They screwed us in ’04. It’s funny, though. We had to go to Chicago, but we have to come back here, yet we have another series with [the Phillies] at home…Why can’t they make the Phillies come to our place and play the [makeup] game?”
McKeon referenced September 2004, when Hurricane Francis and Hurricane Ivan caused significant schedule disruptions. The Marlins saw an entire three-game set against the Cubs wiped out. Two were made up at Sun Life Stadium later as part of a doubleheader, and one of those “home” games was played at Wrigley Field.
Also that month, the Marlins remained in Chicago to avoid Hurricane Ivan and played two games against the Expos at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the White Sox.
“Why should they penalize us this time?” McKeon said. “Oh well.”
Assuming Monday’s doubleheader at Citi Field is played, the Marlins could be looking at 24 games in 23 days. Considering what many residents of the northeast have in store, catcher John Buck said the Marlins have no business griping.
“Put it in perspective as far as what’s really going on,” Buck said. “People are actually leaving their homes and actually evacuating big cities. It’s hard to sit there and complain about a rough travel schedule. You realize the seriousness of what could be going on. If the man upstairs doesn’t want us playing baseball, then that’s kind of the way it is.”
Hurricane Irene Leaves Marlins Spinning in CirclesThe Marlins, who do not play Sunday, are scheduled to play a doubleheader in New York on Monday. But, due to the uncertainty surrounding the storm, the team will remain in Philadelphia throughout the weekend.
Reliever Mike Dunn thought the Marlins and Mets should flip-flop their upcoming series, with the Mets heading down to Florida for the upcoming Monday-through-Thursday series and the Marlins going back to New York Sept. 5-7 for games scheduled at Sun Life Stadium.
I like Dunn's idea. Depending on how much damage the storm does to New York and the power situation, it may be the route to go.Comment
