I think priority #1 of this organization is to offer Mike Stanton a 7 year contract (two free agency years) worth $50-55 million.
If you're wondering, after 2 years of service (Mike will be just over 1 after this season), Justin Upton signed for the same years for $51 million. Cargo, has an 8th year taced on for $80 million. Ryan Howard hit arbitration, and made $105 million the same years.... and the Phillies are on the hook for another $85-100 million (depending on a buyout) the next 3-4 years. Ouch.
Really think about that. If you sign Mike Stanton before the 2012 season, he costs half of what he costs you in three years and that's ignoring the massive backend of a free agency deal. For that money, you break even if he's a 2.5 WAR player the entire time. Stanton would sign it. That money guarantees him for life and he becomes a free agent at 29(!) to have the opportunity at the massive deal.
This is a Cabrera situation. This is 2004 all over again. You have until April 2013 to sign him Beinfest. You will make a Longoria level killing if you do it now. You will have a very beneficial Hanley type contract if you do it next offseason. You get FUCKED if you wait longer because Mike Stanton was born for to set a new arbitration pay scale.
I really hope you guys have learned from your Cabrera mistake.

The tells are usually not very obvious. Hands hanging a certain way or brushing a certain part of their pants.

Either way, can't wait for a Mets writer to speculate about this and an anonymous Helms source to say it's disrespectful of the game and a long time great like Isringhausen.

Yeah, we're still here.

I mean, financially these guys were in a different place even 2 years ago where they waited a little longer with those two so maybe that is why they were signed at a later stage in their career, but they can't do that with Mike. They need to be aggressive and do this before the start of his third year of service time (April 2013).
$50 million for 2012-2018, and he's a free agent at 29 years old. What agent is going to tell a 21 year old kid not to take that two years before arbitration where the Marlins would only be required to pay him roughly $850,000.
