The guy was a horse in the 2000s. Nine 200 inning seasons. Pretty sure he led the decade in strikeouts. He was the definition of 2-3 starter.

I still think a really fun 'what if' is if the beanball from Dempster in 2001 never happens how different their careers may be. Dempster was never the same after that and Javy's 2001 was so spectacular (and he never really was that guy again, save for the one year renaissance in Atlanta) that you felt something was left on the table.

I guess I'm just not sure what you mean by "one of the greatest right-handed pitchers of the last decade."

          Top 10? 20? 30? etc.

I'm not sure how high you have him.

He was usually good for a lot of innings, but he's also a 4.4ish career ERA guy - ~4 FIP guy. Gave up a lot of HR's. Solid pitcher, but certainly not great overall.

I've seen you say that before, and maybe it affected Vazquez, but I think it's likely that Dempster was just never that good. He had a 4.55 ERA at the time of that start and led the league in walks.

I felt Dempster was going to be a star. I really thought he had one of the best right-handed sliders in baseball; sicknasty is selling it short. Then the Javy thing happened and he was a mess. I'd agree with you that maybe he just wasn't that good if it weren't for his after turning 30 seasons with the Cubs. That's a solid / great starter that, again, feels like something was left on the table with mid 20's stamina and stuff.

Just when you think Vazquez is starting to turn the corner he walks THE FUCKING PITCHER to set up a big inning.

Crazy thing.. He struck out the side in the 3rd.. top of the order too. Then the 4th inning all hell broke loose.

mibs that article really just bashed Vazquez who's performance would expect that harsh of treatment.

Stanton goes for 4 in a row tomorrow.

His BB/9 for his first 4 seasons was 6.3, 6.7, 3.9, 4.8. Hitting Javier Vazquez didn't have much to do with why he had no control.

Maybe he doesn't hit Vazquez and his control gets better at 25 instead of 31, but he wasn't that good before he hit Vazquez, so it's not like that draws a line between him being good and him being bad. He wasn't that good before and for 7 solid years, he wasn't that good after.

That's my point. You expect to hear stuff like that from someone like Greg Cote or Mike Bernandina. Not a guy like Clark Spencer that covers the team everyday.

Does Vazquez not suck bad enough for everyone to call him out on it? At this point if his next start is worse than Hand and JJ is back you DFA him. Worst starter in the league remember at that point you're taking abuse from everyone.
