With Josh Johnson’s return from right shoulder inflammation taking longer than anticipated, the Marlins have settled on lefty Brad Hand to start Tuesday’s series opener against the Braves. Hand, who will be making his major league debut, in 11 starts for the Suns is 7-1 with a 3.53 ERA, 27 walks, 44 strikeouts and a .234 batting average against.
Over his last five starts, Hand is 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA, 13 walks and 24 strikeouts in 29 innings. Hand has completed at least six innings in three of his last four outings.
The Marlins selected Hand in the second round of the 2008 draft out of Chaska (Minn.) High School. Baseball America rated Hand the organization’s sixth-best prospect (third-best pitching prospect behind Chad James and Jhan Marinez).
Hand will be the club’s first left-handed starter this season. The Marlins are expected to announce the move on Monday.
