I actually posted in the comments of Capozzi's blog in an article about options for Saturday that we should just do a bullpen day. We have three guys (Sanches, Hopper and Mujica) that can all go multiple innings. They each could go 2-3 innings giving us a minimum of 6 innings covered. The other 6 guys in the bullpen (Dunn, Webb, Hensley, Choate, Nunez and now Cishek) could cover the other three. If JJ is supposed to be back on the first, there's no reason to call up another starter.

Well I doubt this is going to happen, but, they could have just optioned him to New Orleans. This could mean that someone (Koehler?) could start Friday and they wanted to go ahead and make the roster room now.

That's a fantastic way to burn your pen for a week+.

That game also doesn't happen in a vacuum. We're in a West Coast swing and have 3 question marks in our rotation. Burning through the pen on one day would be akin to sacrificing a series, I feel.
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

I'd like to see what Hopperino could do with a start.

Weren't people complaining just a week ago about taking Volstad out an inning early and now you want to have the bullpen pitch a whole game?

This is a totally different situation. We weren't carrying 9 relievers and didn't have JJ on the DL and absoluelty no one to pitch that fifth day. Buente didn't work out, Sanabia is still on the DL, West has made just 1 start and only pitched 3 innings, Koehler is supposed to pitch Thursday so, unless he's scratched for that start, he will now be rested enough to start Saturday and Villanueva is not doing very well in AAA right now. You're now down to two options; 1.) call up a starter who will likely get his ass kicked and not give us much of a chance to win or 2.) go with one of our 9 relievers in our excellent bullpen and let each guy try to get a couple innings and actually give us a chance to try to win the game. Which would you prefer?

It should tell you something if I want the bullpen to cover the game since I was one of the biggest advocates in not having them cover 4 innings after Volstad's last start. We just don't have a hell of a lot of options right now and, odds are, even if we do call up someone else to start, he may not cover many more innings than Buente did.

You're asking the bullpen to cover their current duties and then on top of that link together to pitch a whole game. Hoping on a AAA arm to get you 4-5 innings rather than over working your bullpen for one game seems fine with me.

This seems like a time to give Toby Borland a call.

There's 9 guys down there right now. It's not like I'm advocating trying to have one of them pitch 5 innings. They could each cover an inning a piece and get through 9.

Is it an ideal situation? No, but our options are really quite thin right now. The best scenario would be to just skip that spot in the rotation but we can't do that without all four of our starters going on short rest so that's pretty much out of the question. You're then left with a choice between major league ready pitching giving you a chance to win or raising the white flag and throwing up a non-major league ready pitcher. Both situations suck but you have to decide what the lesser of two evils is. I'd prefer to try and win the game.
