  • Marlins Sign RHP Brian Lawrence

Lastly, the Marlins this week signed Triple-A Portland castoff Brian Lawrence, who last pitched in the majors for the Mets in Aug/Sept 2007, and assigned him to Triple-A New Orleans. He'll start for the decimated Zephyrs tonight against Colorado Springs. Before the Beavers released him on Aug. 1, Lawrence, who started the season with Camden of the independent Atlantic League, went 4-4 with a 6.28 ERA, 14 walks and 26 strikeouts in nine games (eight starts) and 53 innings. Opponents batted .330 off him.

At least he got into the Beavers' record book before he left. Lawrence set a franchise record by allowing 12 earned runs on 14 hits over three innings in the front end of a doubleheader at Salt Lake on July 26. Take that game out of the equation and Lawrence had a 4.50 ERA in 50 innings with Portland.
