  • If You Were Managing This Team...

...how would you use each guy in the bullpen?

If Erick was the manager, he wouldn't try to teach them anything because they are major leaguers and he isn't.

I'm sure John Mallee is the reason why Hanley Ramirez succeeds. He totally doesn't know that he needs to get his foot down; he's never done it before. .313/.385/.520. Someone should teach that guy how to make adjustments. Yeah.

There is no in-between in this world! It's either have all power over hitters or have 0 power. Suggesting one adjustment is akin to wielding all power in a player's potential output.

If I was managing this team I would realize that I don't have nearly as big an impact on the outcome of the game as some would make it seem.

You hang the line up card everyday and pray your team shows up, your defense doesn't look like a junior varsity squad and pray your starter goes 6 innings.

Joe Girardi is the manager of the New York Yankees. That speaks volumes.

The way a manager uses his bullpen has a big impact on winning/losing games. A lot of games are close, and the bullpen must be used, correctly.

You can't just throw a Randy Choate out there against a right-handed hitter, and not expect the game to turn in the opponents favor.

For what it's worth, throwing Ryan Webb against the likes of Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan as Edwin Rodriguez did tonight is not a great idea, either.

Second guessing who the manager trotted out there from the bullpen is the lifeblood of sports message boards.

                I believe Beef coined that.

If a manager is not playing by the #'s, then the person second-guessing the manager is right.

At the end of the day, throwing a guy with a career 1.78 WHIP against left-handed hitters in a tight-game knowing that left-handed hitters are coming up...that's just not a good idea.

Even if it works, it's not a good managerial decision, as the odds are statistically against you.

So what you are getting at is that it all depends on the situation.

But you are also asking that everyone define a specific role for each member of the bullpen

Good point. It's just a given that there HAS TO be a closer, though. HAS TO be a setup man.

But yeah, I wish managers managed based on situations most of the time. Just as I say this, Randy Choate is pitching to right-handed hitters in the 8th inning.

He was pitching to right handed hitters mostly because the game is over.

                          don't need to play R-R or L-L when you're up/down 5+runs late

                            This.

Need to get Choate some work before the Nats series.

He had already had enough work after the Ike Davis at-bat. Ryan Webb needed work too and he was already warming up in the bullpen. Should've at least been in the game once Scott Hairston came up.

Randy Choate doesn't even need that much work because on a normal day, he's throwing like 5 pitches per appearance, at most. He had already done his job getting a guy like Willie Harris out and K'ing Ike Davis.

It's not a big deal because we were getting blown out, but it was still unnecessary.
