  • Top 10 HRs at Sun Life Stadium

    c/o the Sun Sentinel

April 20, 1993: Benito Santiago hits the first Marlins home run at Sun Life Stadium off the Braves' Greg Maddux.

May 31, 1997: Andres Galarraga's hits a 529-foot grand slam off Kevin Brown. It's believed to be the longest in stadium history.

July 13, 1997: Gary Sheffield's homer off the Phillies' Reggie Harris was the second of the inning. He also hit in during the eight-run fourth off Mark Leiter. It was the 38th time in major league history a player homered twice in an inning.

April 23, 1998: Barry Bonds' 400th career homer, which came off Marlins' lefty Kirt Ojala, makes him the charter member of baseball's 400-homer, 400-steals club.

Sept. 2, 1998: Mark McGwire hits a 497-foot homer off Brian Edmundson, the first of two in the game, giving him 59 on his way to what was then a record-setting 70. McGwire added another, estimated at 458 feet, off Rob Stanifer in the eighth.

Aug. 17, 2002: Career home run No. 601 for Barry Bonds came off Josh Beckett. What made it interesting? The bat shattered in half and Bonds still powered the ball just over the right-field fence.

June 20, 2003: Miguel Cabrera hits a walk-off homer in his first major league game. He became third player since 1900 to hit game-winning homer in his debut, joining Billy Parker (1972) and Josh Bard (2002).

Oct. 22, 2003: Miguel Cabrera, after being brushed back by Roger Clemens in the first inning, goes opposite field for a two-run homer.

Oct. 22, 2003: Alex Gonzalez's walk-off, 12th inning homer off Jeff Weaver clinches Game 4 of the 2003 World Series.

Aug. 31, 2005: Jeremy Hermida becomes the second of four players in major league history to hit a grand slam in his first at-bat. He hit off the Cardinals' Al Reyes. Bill Duggleby was the first guy to do it in 1898. Kevin Kouzmanoff and Daniel Nava have done it since Hermida's.

I was at that Galarraga game. As a 10 year old I was positive it went at least 700 feet. I will never forget seeing that shot.
    --------------------
    McGwire's 59th shouldn't be on that list, Griffey's 600th should.

Ahh Herminda's grand slam, I remember it like it was yesterday. Pulled it down the right field line. I thought he was going to be THE shit but then he was just shit.

Hermida's HR was so dope. In the rain and totally awesome. Too bad he never lived up to his potential.

I remember those punk kids who caught the Mark McGwire balls. For some reason they became temporary celebrities.

I'm having a hard time remembering whether I was there for the McGwire game. I remember being at a game where he sent one into the stratosphere. (So, a 497 ft. shot sounds about right) Was there another game like that?

Was that on national TV? Because I feel like I remember watching that live in my dorm.

I saw it on FSN Midwest I believe.

Its possibly a bad omen of a player hits a grand slam on his first at bat.

Or maybe it's just one at-bat.

Where is Bobby Bo's Game 7 homer?

Didn't Niner hit a home run that pretty much ended the season for Philly in 2003?
