He hasn't done anything great and hasn't done anything poorly either.
I think the fact that he gets Volstad to actually throw to first base is worth $2 M by itself
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

I have zero complaints about a catcher putting up a .725 OPS while passing both the eye test and the stats test defensively. That's absolutely worth 6.25 million.

It's generally accepted amongst people who accept these sorts of things that a win on the free agent market is work $5mil. According to Fangraphs, John Buck has been worth .7 Wins so far. He's going to more than earn that contract.

If this is what $6.25 million is supposed go get you I want a refund. He looks lost out there--and not a Mike Stanton lost one day, beast the next-- stuck on a desert island lost.

I guess he's no longer a crowd favorite.

Exhibit B why trading Hanley is a bad idea; Beinstein isn't really good trying to be 'shrewd.'

Anyone can give Pujols and his ilk contracts; it's the $5 mil to $10 mil contracts that a GM has to make his reputation on, and early returns on Beinfest when he has money to play with seem poor.

Except that Beinfest has as many achievements as failures in those instances.

                        But yeah, he sucks.

He hasn't had a lot of them but these worked:

                          Delgado
                          Hanley
                          JJ
                          Pudge

                          And these didn't:

                          LoDuca
                          Vazquez
                          Leiter

I think it's way too early to say anything conclusive about Buck or Nolasco. Am I missing anything as far as multi year contracts or big FA signings?
                          --------------------
Also, this guy was sought after by the Yankees and Red Sox. What was supposed to be shrewd about this signing? It was basically a market value contract for the 2nd best FA catcher in the class.

The Yankees and Red Sox fought over 2000 Jose Canseco. I fail to see how them wanting Buck makes his signing the right one.

Also, Pudge was a one year deal, if you're including him, have to also include Javy.

                              That's not the point.

You said it was supposed to be a "shrewd" signing. I don't understand what that could mean, given that he was a pretty highly sought after FA who basically got a market value or even slightly above contract.

That's why Vazquez is on the list of people who didn't work.

I was using shrewd sarcastically. Hence 'shrewd'.
