  • Marlins Announce Non-Roster Invites

We knew most of this but they announced who they are bringing in to spring training as non-roster invitees:

A couple new names on the list of non-roster invitees the Marlins released on Thursday. Perhaps the two most intriguing are infielder Joe Thurston and outfielder DeWayne Wise.

Thurston became a well regarded prospect in the Dodgers’ system after they drafted him in the fourth round in 1999. He made his major league debut in 2002, but he never establshed himself on the club and since 2005 has played for four different organziations. The left-handed hitting Thurston can play second, third and short, and is a career .293-.355-.420 hitter in the minors. He last appeared in the majors in 2009 with the Cardinals, totaling 307 plate appearances and batting .225.

Also a left-handed hitter, Wise since 2000 has totaled 376 games in the majors with five different teams. He is perhaps best known for an outstanding catch in center as a member of the 2009 White Sox that presevered a perfect game for Mark Buehrle. Wise played all three outfield positions with the Blue Jays in 2010.

Other players signed to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training: RHP Frank Mata; LHPs Darin Downs and Victor Garate; C Clint Sammons; INFs Jamie D’Antona, Ruben Gotay, and Josh Kroeger; and OF outfielders Chris Lubanski.

The organizational players who will be in big league camp: RHPs Tom Koehler and Elih Villanueva; LHPs Brad Hand, Chad James, Dan Jennings and Robert Rasmussen; catchers Vinny Rottino and Kyle Skipworth; INFs Matt Dominguez, Donnie Murphy and Tim Torres; and OF Jon Raynor.

Someone explain "non-roster invitee" to me. By non-roster, it's non-40 man, correct?

Yes, they bring guys into camp who are not on the 40-man roster. I believe it can be up to 15 additional players. They are prospects who are not yet eligible for the Rule V draft, or veteran guys they signed (Clay Hensley is an example)

Clint Sammons used to be very highly thought of.

He put up an amazing .497 OPS (.162/.253/.244) in AAA last season.
