  • Marlins Sign Randy Choate

The Marlins have agreed to sign Randy Choate to a two-year deal worth $5MM plus incentives, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). ACES represents Choate.

The 35-year-old led the league in appearances (85), but logged just 44 2/3 innings, since he's generally a lefty specialist. Choate posted a 4.23 ERA with 8.1 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 for the Rays last year.

At least two teams besides the Marlins pursued Choate. The Rays offered the Type B free agent arbitration, so they'll receive a supplementary first round pick in next year's draft.
Ken_Rosenthal: To clarify: Choate with #Marlins is two years, $2.5 million TOTAL, not per season. Plus incentives in each year. #Rays #MLB

Choate gets $1M in 2011 and $1.5 in '12 from #Marlins with $150,000 in performance bonuses each year based upon appearances. #Rays #MLB

2.5 total is way better. I was going to totally not enjoy that.

As long as he doesn't face any RHB this is for me.

Are we sure Leo closes over Claymation?

Nice to get a lefty at an affordable price, good deal.

Kind of amazed they guaranteed 2 years. I'd be mad if it was more money, but not bad.

                      SP Chris Volstad $430,000
                      RP Leo Nunez $4,000,000
                      RP Clay Hensley $1,750,000
                      RP Edward Mujica $1,000,000
                      RP Randy Choate $1,000,000
                      RP Brian Sanches $430,000
                      RP Ryan Webb $430,000
                      RP Mike Dunn $410,000

                      $55,880,000

                      RP Burke Badenhop $600,000

*Buck Technically making $4.5 million in salary in 2010, but received a $1.5 million signing bonus. Cot’s recently has been averaging his contract $5-6.5-6.5, i.e. distributing the bonus over all 3 seasons.
*Infante Base Salary of $2.5, but has plate appearance incentives. Will likely make $500k-1 million more
*Nolasco, Anibal, Nunez, Hensley, Mujica, Badenhop are estimates
*Going under rough formula $410,000 for first year, $420 2nd, $430 3rd. This is minimum salary roughly adjusted by $10k for cost of living inflation in CBA
*Coghlan gets more because of his ROY escalator versus other club controlled types
                      * Badenhop likely has a split MLB/MILB K, so the Marlins will have “26” players counting towards payroll. Unknown how much he gonna be

That first number scared me 5 mill plus incentives was way to much in my mind but 2.5 over 2 years is a great move.

Are we sure Leo is on the team come opening day? This is a really crowded bullpen but that is a good thing.

I'm not a fan of going with 13 bullpen arms. That's just me though.

If Leo is moved, Clay to closer?
                          --------------------
Well actually, we would have twelve if Burke is optioned so it can be set, with Sanches being our "longman"

That would be nice though. JJ start every game and then 13 bullpen guys. That is the secret to success.
