The write up on the Marlins site mentions that his recovery time is supposed to take a minimum of four months and that he might not be ready for spring training so I can see why they took him off the roster.

Besides, with as many guys as we added to the roster in September to cover injuries (and try out in the bullpen), our 40-man is still at 39 after this move (assuming that we have to put Paulino back on. I'm not sure how players on the restricted list are taken care of in the offseason). Removing Ohman and Tracy takes us to 37 (assuming we don't retain them). That's not a lot of room to play with in the free agent market, especially if we want to protect any rule V eligible guys.
