I feel like people are missing you are moving him from a position where he is above average to a position where he is average. You probably spend the same amount of money to fill either position an average starter or above average reliever so either way you have to fill a hole.
I'm more confident with the group of starters we have not named JJ, Anibal and Nolasco will produce to an equal ability that Hensley would starting. I would not be confident with any of them in a set up/closer role.

I think we really need to start looking at turning our failed starters into relievers with how bad our bullpen has been. Let West, Hensley, Sanabia, and Volstad duke it out for two spots - losers go to pen.

Says who? The Hensley from a couple of years ago, who was starting for the Padres, would not have been successful out of the pen. He was successful out of the pen this year, because he's a better pitcher now than he was a couple years ago. Even if what you are saying is true, that he's an awesome reliever, but average/below average starter, then we can just move him back to reliever if he's beaten out in Spring Training.

Yeah Hensley is acting like a completely new pitcher with the new change up, and what he throws/how often he throws it is completely different. You can't really say "that's how he'd do as a starter" when looking at his past because his talent level has changed.

Split AB R H HR BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
            as Starter 868 118 226 21 104 138 .260 .340 .395 .735
            as Reliever 600 63 132 4 73 140 .220 .308 .300 .608

Thats a lot bigger sample size than this season.

Again: He is a completely different pitcher! You cannot compare him to past stats. He has a new pitch which he utilizes often and his pitch repertoire because of it is basically completely different.

When he started, he threw his FB 60% of the time, Slider 20% of the time, CB 10% of the time, and change 10% of the time.

              Now he's a FB 50%, change 20%, curve 20%, slider 10%

How he pitches is completely different and so you cannot compare results now to results from before

No, he's not going to put up his 2.25 ERA in a starting role - nobody thinks he will. The general bump from relief to starting is 0.80 points of FIP. That'd put him at a 3.70 ERA - which would likely make him our 2nd best SP next year

I say we trade him for Colby Rasmus. Cardinals would give him up for anything, I read it somewhere on here.

Why would you trade Hensley for Rasmus? Maybin maybe, but Hensley?

                            Is that a serious question?

I mean I was being sarcastic because the thought of the Cardinals giving up Rasmus for Clay Hensley is hilarious.

But seriously...why would I trade Clay Hensley for a highly-touted 23 year old center fielder who just hit .276/.361/.498 and plays great defense? Um, because it'd be retarded not to?
