While well intentioned and has short term benefit, many of the strategies used by charitable organizations hurt the long term development of impoverished countries. It's nice to say "Yeah we donated 100 million bottles of water" but it isn't that simple. A great example of this has been Haiti. The country received so much aid in the wake of the earthquakes that the economy has collapsed making people who were already poor poorer. "Why pay for something when it's free?" Haiti is going to be much worse off when everyone moves on to the next 'cool' movement.

Bono's ONE campaign advocates more foreign aid to poorer countries. Foreign aid is probably the biggest reason why Africa is so corrupt and behind the rest of the world.
