He was called up less than 20 days after he was optioned, so an option was not used. They waited until the 19th day to call him up

    http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/team/t...r=2006&month=8

    Optioned: 8/8
    Called up: 8/27

It's possible the transaction dates are off, though. But I'm sure the Tigers weren't going to waste an option pointlessly, hence calling him up pre-September.

      According to MLB Daily dish-

The Boston Globe is reporting that the Marlins have interest in veteran catcher Victor Martinez. Martinez is hitting .292 with 15 home runs and a .340 on-base percentage, 28 points below his career OBP. Still, Martinez is a premier hitter who would greatly benefit any major league lineup.

The Marlins do not have much spending room but might be able to squeeze in Martinez if the ownership allows for a splash. There ability to lure a big time free agent will certainly depend on who they name their next manager.

Having interest still doesn't mean they'll make a competitive offer.

mlb daily dish != reputable source, and they don't even quote an "unnamed" source. i feel like they're just farting out news because it's september 13th and no one cares about anything else

They quoted the Boston Globe. The actual MLB Dish article linked to it.

              Here's the Boston Globe piece:

              3. Victor Martinez, C, Red Sox — Add the Marlins to the growing list of teams that would love to have him. The Marlins aren’t crazy about V-Mart’s defense but would love his presence as a professional hitter in a lineup with Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla. It appears that Martinez’s price will increase as free agency approaches. The Sox knew their two-year offer wouldn’t get it done, but now it has become a jumping-off point for more serious negotiations when the season ends.

btdubz what i kinda meant to say is that daily dish isn't that reputable, boston globe isn't that good at breaking news, and if you follow those links it's:

daily dish saying we might be interested > ben maller saying boston globe says we'd love to have him > boston globe saying we'd love his presence. oooooh
                --------------------
wanks beat me to my addendum

anyway breaking news: Marlins might go after Pujols if he's a free agent

He's Hispanic and a good hitter and the Marlins would love his veteran presence in his lineup

I'd love Bobby V to manage this lineup-

                  Cogz
                  Lomo
                  V-Mart
                  H2R
                  Uggla
                  Gaby
                  Stanton
                  Maybin

And then comes our pitching, which I have no comment for.

Are you leaving out Fielder because he is black?

I'd love Jim Leyland to manage this lineup:

                    Ichiro
                    Lomo
                    McCann
                    Hanley
                    Uggla
                    Hanley again
                    Stanton
                    2000 Preston Wilson
                    Dennis Cook

2003 Preston was better; i'm sure Roids played a huge role in this.

Five Volstad's could comprise the rotation for that team and they'd win 85 games.

No, he's one of the hardest working guys out there, his numbers were just kind of blown out of proportion for a couple seasons during the steroid era.
