Florida Marlins: Mustachioed Andrew Miller arrives; Cameron Maybin to follow?
    by: Juan C. Rodriguez August 19th, 2010 | 6:20 PM
First thing we need to address is the mustache. Andrew Miller arrived looking like he just came off the set of a Clint Eastwood western. He’s sporting a scraggly mustache and accompanying soul patch.

“He looks like the Tombstone guy,” said manager Edwin Rodriguez, referencing Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Doc Holliday in the movie. “I asked him, ‘What are we doing down there?’ As long as he comes in and throws strikes he can keep that mustache.”

So why Miller inspite of the fact he’s 0-3 in four August starts with an ERA over 8? Taylor Tankersley was struggling and the Marlins wanted a guy with better stuff in the pen. Whether that stuff translates into outs is the question the Marlins want answered over the final six weeks.

The other key figure of the Miguel Cabrera trade with the Tigers may not be long for the minors either. Like Miller, Cameron Maybin has been unable to lock down a spot on the major league roster. Maybin is tearing up the Pacific Coast League again, batting .342 with a .921 on-base plus slugging percentage in 30 games. The Marlins are looking at how to make the necessary roster adjustment to get Maybin back up here. That could mean finding a taker for the struggling Cody Ross.

Waiver information is guarded like the Oval Office. It’s uncertain whether the Marlins have attempted to pass Ross through waivers and if so whether he cleared. If he cleared, the Marlins are free to trade Ross to any team. If he was claimed, they could trade him to the claiming team or pull him back. Without revealing Ross’ waiver status, one American League source in contact with the Marlins put the chances of Ross finishing the year with the club at “40-60.”

The Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Braves and Padres were among the teams that inquired about Ross before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Ross or any other player would have to be on the club’s roster by Aug. 31 to be eligible for the postseason.

At the very latest, Maybin will rejoin the Marlins when rosters expand on Sept. 1.
