MIAMI -- The Marlins battled in the late innings and came away with a 5-2 victory over the Cubs on Friday night before 25,024 fans at Land Shark Stadium.

With two outs and the game tied at 2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Marlins plated the go-ahead run when John Baker singled off reliever Carlos Marmol. The base hit to right allowed Dan Uggla to score from second, but Florida was not done yet. Wes Helms pinch-hit for Chris Coghlan and came up with a two-run double off the left-field scoreboard that gave the Marlins the lead for good.

Chris Volstad was perfect through four innings before surrendering a hit to Aramis Ramirez in the top of the fifth. The right-hander flustered Cubs hitters until the seventh inning, when Jake Fox clubbed a game-tying two-out two-run homer into the seats beyond the left-field fence. The Cubs would threaten to take the lead, putting runners on first and second, but reliever Dan Meyer struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Baker to end the inning.

Volstad finished his start allowing two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out five, but he was not the only pitcher to have a solid start. Cubs starter Rich Harden was dominant for most of his five innings, holding the Marlins to two runs on five hits while striking out 11, but made two mistakes that put Chicago in a hole.

Florida's starting pitcher came through at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the second to earn his first career RBI. Volstad gave himself some run support when he stroked a 1-0 curveball deep to center that brought home Jeremy Hermida. An inning later, Jorge Cantu added some offense of his own when he blasted a 3-1 slider over the left-field scoreboard. The two-out solo shot was Cantu's 11th of the season.
Three runs in eighth give Marlins win

i really wished we got pavano, the hopper role in the bullpen was vital to alot of wins, but i think he can be a servicable 5th guy. Hopefully Saches can step up

Yeah that would have to be the case. We don't really have any other options for the #5 slot.
I understand that part, but who the hell is going to back up Cody in CF if something happens? There's two outfielders (one that looks lost out there at times) and two second basemen.

Really great win. Big crowd and good baseball. Cody's catch was pretty sick and it makes his slump not hurt so bad.

Am I the only one who isn't sold on "The Hopper" (lolz) yet? I mean, if we were to make the playoffs there would be no need for him to be a starter and he's fine for middle relief but........

Oh and tommorow night, the Nick and his big Johnson make their debut in front of a Saturday night crowd. Wish I was going but I have to work.
