I would say actively rooting against players on your own team is pretty shitty, but that's just me. Like, bragging about how you heckled that player at a game is pretty dumb.
Also, you are ridiculous when it comes to him, so it's also not worth discussing.
His OPS for the 2009 season was over .700. His OPS for his career is .008 below .700.
He also has less plate appearances over his entire major league career than Emilio Bonifacio got last year alone. To talk about him like he'll never be anything makes you look ridiculous.
When Maybin was sent down last year his OPS was .582.
When Maybin was sent down last year his OPS was .582.
And in a larger sample size (104 PA > 95 PA), he was able to bring that over .700 (your self chosen criteria of non-shittiness) for the season because he hit an awesome .293/.353/.500 in 104 PA in September/October.
And what will be the criteria on when Cameron Maybin will be officially become a former BA top prospect that never put it together? At some point, the title of top prospect has to come off.
It's been two seasons now that Cameron Maybin has been given the opportunity out of spring training to become a full time centerfielder. Both chances he has come out of the gate looking completely overmatched at the plate. Granted, defensively he has improved in recent weeks and is now our best defensive centerfielder. But offensively this guy is still a disaster. He strikes out way too much and hasn't even shown the power that would make him a Preston Wilson-type player (As I recall this was a low end projection for him when we first acquired him).
If heckling him makes me the worst person ever in your minds so be it. Maybe I think people who tolerate players like Cameron Maybin are the worst fans ever.
I think heckling or rooting against a player on your own team is stupid, regardless of who it is. I also kind of think it's irrelevant to this discussion, so we can just drop it if we want.
Cameron Maybin may end up being a bad player. He is a bad player right now, so maybe I should say he may never end up being a good player. But he's also shown that he can be a very good player. He showed it in spurts this season and he showed it over the last month of the season last year.
It's too early to say definitively that he will or won't be, but I think we have to give him the benefit of the doubt for a little while more because he was an extremely highly though of prospect and he hasn't ever had an extended tryout over a full season.
You might say that he's never earned it, but there's been lots of guys who have been as bad as him over the first months of their seasons and been allowed to work out of it. It just so happens that the margin for error for this team is so low that we can't really afford to let him keep doing this.
If he's still under .650 by whenever the Super Two deadline is, by all means, send him back to AAA again and start the process again next year.
However, if he's still outproducing CC at that point, what do you do?
