This is almost as perplexing as why we called up Petersen in the first place. Now we're replacing him with a right handed hitting catcher.

Bryan Petersen Optioned to AAA, Brett Hayes Recalled

In advance of the four-game set with the Mets, the Marlins optioned outfielder Bryan Petersen to Triple-A New Orleans and recalled catcher Brett Hayes. Having that third catcher on the bench enables Fredi Gonzalez to pinch-hit John Baker and Ronny Paulino at will. Gaby Sanchez was designated as the emergency catcher, but on some occasions he exits late in games to accommodate Jorge Cantu’s slide from third to first….

I think they would rather have the luxury of using Baker or Paulino as an extra bat coming off the bench late in games since outside of Helms our bench has been totally useless for the most part. Peterson wasn't really doing what they were looking for and you can't blame him either. It's tough to adjust to a bench role when you're used to playing everyday.. especially for a rookie.
I'm just guessing Hayes is up for a week or so until they think Mienkewich (god how do you spell that? lol) is ready to go and hit MLB pitching.

I'm thinking maybe they just want Mientkiewicz to get some more ABs at AAA before calling him up? He was released in the spring, and I don't think he was playing for anyone before the Marlins picked him up about a week ago. So maybe Hayes is just up as that emergancy catcher so they can use Paulino/Baker more freely as a pinch hitter until they are ready to bring up Mientkiewicz.
