  • Morning After: Astros 7, Marlins 5

    The Miami Herald
A victory would have made too much sense for the Marlins on Tuesday. The Houston Astros hadn't won at home this season and starting pitcher Brett Myers had mustered only one victory from his 10 previous starts against the Marlins.

In the end, simple logic didn't hold up.

With their 7-5 setback to the last-place Astros at Minute Maid Park, the Marlins continued their habit of dropping series openers. The Marlins have lost the opening game in each of their five series, but are 8-1 in all of their other games.

In losing their fifth straight series opener, the Marlins wasted another nice offensive performance from Jorge Cantu. He went 2 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to 18 games dating back to the last four of 2009.

Starter Chris Volstad went six, but could not muster a shutdown inning. The Marlins scored in the top half of the first, second and sixth and the Astros answered each time.

"As a pitcher that's what you want to do, get your offense back into the dugout and keep scoring runs," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We didn't do that."

Something else you can't explain: After winning the final two games in Philadelphia while holding the powerhouse Phillies to one run, the Marlins gave up seven to a team that entered the game last in the majors with 28 runs, three home runs and a .215 average.

But Jason Michaels' pinch-hit, two-run home run in the eighth inning off loser Tim Wood (0-1) gave the Astros their season high in runs.

"They added on in the game and we didn't," manager Fredi Gonzalez said
